Newbie: I got my first cabby..

Hi,
I am very pleased I got my cabby last night on ebay for £510…

I have been looking for the right car for the right money for a while and this one just seemed the one.

106k, 1987, 1.8, Clipper, it has a sound body (just a couple of small cosmetic rust spots which can wait til winter) and 6 months mot, I am delighted with my little steal. I am well looking forward to my new project.

The only problem is it is Reading and I am in Leeds. I have blagged a work meeting in London on wednesday so will be picking up on thursday. Work pay the train and petrol to bring her home, result.

The next job is finding a way to convert the lap belts to full belts in the back to take the boys out for a run..I have searched Mk1.org but not found the answer yet..

Thanks spud.

Yeah it has six months mot but it has only been used for about 2k since last mot so fingers crossed should not have any real issues.

I think it looks good for a monkey… one to keep I hope.

Looks clean and pretty standard too! What colour is the interior? Beige or black I can't quite tell on my phone.
Keep the bumpers in good condition or give them to me! They are very hard to come by with the chrome in good nick.

Welcome to the site.

Thanks for the bumper advice Dano.

It is an E reg (E80 ***) so quite a nice plate too, not sure if it is worth anything.

The interior is grey and black and pretty tidy except a small tear on the drivers seat. No big holes in the parcel shelf! I plan to keep it pretty standard but lowered and change the wheels as the GTI wheels don't work for the look i want (G60 Steelies i think? but I am new to this game so i might not have that right).

interior pics.

Here is an update on my first week of Clipper ownership.

I collected my cabby last week. Got to say for £475 on ebay ( i got £25 back off the seller as the Tax is due in two weeks!) it is amazing.

My first drive was over 200 miles from Basingstoke to Huddersfield. The car performed really well and I got back with no dramas.

So what is she like.

The car is extremely reliable, fires very easily.  The paintwork and body are excellent for a red car of its year.  Very shiny, with one panel that is marginally faded but when I wax and polish comes up beautifully, only a couple of small places of rust (on the drivers side of windscreen and above passenger door handle, where someone has had a got with a screwdriver). No welding and she is rust free throughout.

This car is very original, it has not had many modifications.  Original seats, one with a small tear about 2 inches long, others in good untarnished condition.  The alloy wheels are Forged polished VW Le Castellet's 14" and are in excellent nick. The car does have an alarm.

It does not have a stereo, and I have not got round to even thinking about that yet. Planning to convert the ash try into an Ipod dock.

Receipts show they replaced the outside vinyl hood in 2005 with a brand new one.  The inner lining is marked and has not been updated.  There does seem to be very minor seeping of water from the seals contact to the hood on the drivers side even though the fitting appears very good.

They have replaced various exhaust components,  most notably the front down pipe which is good.  Fuel filler neck has also been replaced with a new one.  Cam Belt was changed in the summer of 2009, approx 6000 miles ago. Other running components replaced as normal, brake hose, water hoses etc.   The car has always gone through MOT's smoothly with only a few wear and tear items replaced.   A couple of weeks ago they had 2 new tyres put on the front wheels and the wheel alignment and cambers adjusted.

The bits that need attention.

The mileometer stopped working during 2006 and only now very intermittently clocks up miles.
My estimate for the mileage is 135000 is based on 102000 (verified by MOT the 2006 certificate).

The carburettor does tend to rev between 2000 and 3000 revs during the first couple of minutes whilst the automatic choke is on.  It settles down as soon as the choke closes off.

Under normal driving when accelerating aggressively it does splutter/misfire between 2000-3000 revs. I am hoping it is just a weak spark plug, as it is fine on gentle acceleration. This suggests that the fuel is putting the spark out under heavy fuel. I have some new plugs in the post so fingers crossed. If not then I hope it is not too pricey to fix.

Overall, the engine compartment could do with some tidying up and it does leak a small amount of oil.  Looks like the rocker cover could probably do with replacing and it is probably due an oil change.  The gear linkage is fine but could do with a refurb but not a priority.

Overall it is an absolute steal and I keep pinching myself i got it all for £475.
