Newbie- First Issue with my cabby..
I need to consult the knowledge council please.
Just bought a 1.8 1987 clipper (non fuel injection).
I had to call the AA today to get me going as the car kept stalling at idle and then would not start. The AA guy got it working by reving the ar5e off it until she idled fine. He said it was muck in the carb but i think that is a cop out. He also angled the inline filter so stop a large bubble forming, by running the hose over the air filter hose.
I think it is more significant than muck in the carb as it started playing its old tricks again on my way home again. There is also a random click in the engine bay at idle if that helps? Below is the history that has built up to today. Hope you can help.
The car since I brought it, does tend to rev between 2000 and 3000 revs during the first couple of minutes whilst the automatic choke is on. It settles down as soon as the choke closes off.
Under normal driving when accelerating aggressively it does deliver fuel under this (2000 - 3000) load hesitantly, the previous owner had tweaked it a few times each year when he gots a MOT reading but it never seems to hold perfectly for longer than a month or so.
Any advice please, i can't be spluttering down the road it is not a strong look.

I'd stick your hand up the drivers rear wheel arch and check all around it.

What is the best way to flush any muck out?
On the carb, it is a pierburg.

I had same symptoms as you: Cutting out at idle and hesitating when accelerating. It was rust particles getting into the carb from a rusty fuel tank.
I had the carb stripped and cleaned and I replaced the fuel tank, filler pipe and fuel filter.
In the short term before I did the work, I replaced the fuel filter on a regular basis and got a lot of rust out the tank buy using a magnet on some string and 'fishing' through the sender unit opening (under rear seats). This helped, but it was clear the tank and fuel filler neck needed replacing.
Runs like a dream now!

I am no mechanic but i think it is a blockage issue. Common sense says that if fuel passes fine under low acceleration, then there must be a blockage somewhere that fuel at higher volumes is building up behind.
Will let you know how it goes.

Changed the plugs and it runs like a dream. I had planned to SORN her while i got it fixed, not any more.
I remembered they had opened a GSF 5 mins down the road. Popped down got some plugs for a tenner and a Rocker cover gasget for £2.50 at the same time to fix my oil leak.
I am amazed that a shop so small would have a mk1 golf gasket sat on the shelf.
I am a happy boy.
