NEWB from the U.S.

ok so i am looking to get inbto my 1st vw. i am looking a a 85 gti the owner wants 1000 for her.
now i dont know anything about VW's, i know how to do a full tune up what will i need to look for when purchasing a car like this?
he says the previous owner is a vw mechanic.

85 vw gti, mars red 160k 8v motor 5 speed, lots of receipts,timing belt,new clutch ,good rubber ect… current smog and tags,reliable good on gas, fast, fun
