new to mark 1 owners with a few questions

Always been a fan of the looks of the mark one golf, and really fancy buying one but haven't got the first clue about them? when looking at them is there anythings i should be wary about? i am 20 years old with one years no claims and would love a three door, what spec/model am i better looking at for insurance reasons? obviously not a gti lol, any help or pointers in the right direction would be great Cheers! neil (hopefully future mk1 golf owner)

Hi and welcome!
You've come to the right place to find out all about Mk1 Golfs! On the homepage there's a GTI buying guide which will give you an idea of important things to check on any Mk1 you go to see.
As for 3 door non-GTI's to choose from, the two later models you're most likely to come across are:
The 1.3 'Golf Driver' (60hp) is a nice option, if you can get one, because it has a lot of GTI trim as standard such as twin headlamps, sporty steering wheel, chin spoiler, arch trims etc. The insurance group is relatively low (I think it's lower than my diesel mk1 for example).
There's also the 3 door 1.1 (50hp) 'Golf C' model. Low spec trim, but you can modify it and upgrade the trim easily (or find one of the many already modified ones).
There's a lot more choice of non-GTI 5 door models if you expand your search to include these (CL, GX, GL etc).
Feel free to post a 'Cars Wanted' ad up aswell, and enjoy browsing the forum to find out more.
