Hi Folks
I'm helping out my daughter, who's just bought a 1981 MK1 cabby (on ebay and yes I warned her!) anyway it runs ok but needs a little more welding than was first evident! Fortunately I'm ok with a Mig!

The trouble is those pesky double skinned inner wings! as you can see from the pics its rotten around the scuttle, 8O  it seems to me that the best way is to cut the outer inner wing away,  :( chop up the rust and weld it back up.   This car is never going to be concours and my aim is repair it well enough to smarten it up and give it a few more years life (200k already on the clock!).

So any hints or tips, can you get new inner wings anywhere?

BTW how can I tell what model it is?

Cheers, and hey Lordsy (another new member) i'm in Exeter too !!

Wow and Welcome  :D

You should be able to get some repair panels from

http://www.perfectpanels.co.uk/

or http://www.gpcvwaudi.com/main.htm

or Car Parts & Spares -- Buy Online with Fast UK Delivery | GSF Car Parts

And your local VW Dealer ………. 8O

Avoid Ebay unless you have tried all other possible outlets .

Most of that rot is flat panel so you may be able to chop out and weld in the new using just plate . Invest in some later model under wing covers to prevent re- ocurrance when you have finished .

Pictures always welcome of repair work in the relevant section for all to see .

Good luck with it ……….

Hi and Welcome

8O I'm suprised at the amount of rust/rot that's on that inner wing considering how the rest of the car looks

as Chudd has said repair panels are available at those places, had to do both my inner wings along the top edge, wasn't too difficult once I'd cut and beaten the old metal off

Looks Like a Mk1 Clipper to me??  :dontknow: (not too hot on the cabby models)

Hi, and welcome

Can't help with welding advice, but can wish you luck

You'll get your reward for your hard work when you see the smile on your daughter's face every time she drives it!

Thanks folks, I'll check out those links.  The car looks good from a distance but rust is bubling up on wing edges and door tops, oddly the boot lock area has metal worm too.  I think it was tarted up a few years ago and the filler is just starting to show its age!  The hood is good and it starts and runs well enough but the gearbox linkage has just broken and am having a bit of trouble getting one the right length.  Will try Exeter VW as they recon they still get them.  The panels are fairly flat and easy to weld but you try getting an anglegrinder in between the suspension tower and the scuttle! I dont think it will look beautiful when Ive fininshed but hopefully no one is going to look too closely under the wheel arch!
