New Mk1 owner in ICELAND! Now with pictures ;) (24.08.11)

Hey guys, My name is Hörður and I come from Iceland. I've been checking you site out for a few days trying to decide if I should go for it…. and buy a Mk1 Golf that I was offered.

And today I bought it!

It's a 1982 Golf with a 1.1l engine. It needs a lot of work but I'm getting everything with it and it's drivable. (Pics later)

I'm plannig to just start with a body restoration and then overhaul the 1.1l engine. Possibly swap it out for a 1.8T later. As of now I have done no work on it and not even picked it up from the guy that sold it to me :P (Had to go to work) :(

Over the next few days I'll just be sanding out some rust and hand painting it just to keep it from rusting more while I strip it down and get things ready.

Hopefully I'll get some help here both on the restoration it self and sourcing some parts.

Yes I'm soooooooo exited!!! :O

I'm stuck at work googling "mk1 Golf" but the computer here has "restricted access" So even though I can go on here I can't see any pics!

I'm just looking at some pics on Google and dreaming about what to do with my car…

NO! There are NOT many Mk1's here in Iceland. I'm not kidding when I say that mine is the ONLY one I know off. So there are at most 4 - 6 running Mk1's here.

That's amazing that you have found one then!!!  Are you going for the standard look, euro look, modified look or something else?  Bet you're glad you found us then.  Can you see pics at home?

Ehh… I actually don't even know what the euro look is  :redfaced:

But I'll start of just by restoring it as a standard, then I think I'll go for the lightly modified plain look. Nothing flashy, just so people can see that something has been done with it. But the paint will be kinda flashy. Maybe build a "sleeper", thinking of dropping in a tuned up Mk4 1.8T engine.

Just got a garage and I'm about to move the car up there. We'll be starting by stripping the car and sandblasting so I know what I've gotten self into :s

I'm thinking of re-building the 1.1l just for fun and to learn from it and then finding and re-building a Mk4 1.8t gti to use in it. Now I'm just reading up on things and finding out what I need to buy and do to get the car into the shape I want it in…

I have a question on here in "running gear": http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=711609#711609
