New Mk1 Club Member with Campaign Grill/Fog Lamp Id Problem

Can you help?

I recently bought a Mk1 Formel e 5 door for my wife. its got 75K on the clock and itsnt rotting, even tho its a five door Im going to put some effort into her. I wanted a chrome grill surround and I found a campaign grill for sale. I bought it with the vertical line fogs attached. It was in great condition so i sold it back without the chrome hoping that a campaign golfer would need the fogs or plastics. I quoted all my part numbers and marking with good photos here…

Ebay Item number: 160108588322 (UK)

I bought the grill from this advert…

Ebay Item number: 130099209649

A guy called Afjal says this is the real deal…

Ebay Item number: 140112796857

What afjal says

"aright mate.
i am a golf enthusiast and am sorry to tell you but they are not camapign lights.
the campaigns have thick lines like the headlights and the part number on the glass finishes 037 not 040.
hope this helps you out.
cheers"

"ARIGHT MATE.
IF YOU CHECK OUT ANY MK1 FORUMS YOU WILL FIND OUT OR SEE MY AD ITEM NUMBER 140112796857 , FOR THE GENUINE ITEM.
HOPE THIS HELPS.
THANKS"

Heres what my seller says…

"mate, get on the mk1 golf club site, and check out how you can tell a genuine campaign, see the bit about grill, hope this gives you peace of mind, cheers"

Im taking the advise of my seller and asking you! I hope he's right.

I have listed the options I feel are nessesary in a poll but please come say hi and give your advise! Thankyou

LOL, nothing like noobies bring problems is there?

We'll have to rely on someone with an original Campaign to go and check the part number of their foglights! I've just looked it up on ETKA and the original foglight is no longer listed (so no part number), its been superseded with 155 941 783 A which is a plain (like yours) main beam light, not a foglight. So, according to VW, both are still Campaign items! But then you can't really take that at face value, for example if you want to buy a Golf ball gearknob, you can go into VW and order the part and they'll send a plain one.

So I'd say it looks like he's right here, the foglights are rare and no longer obtainable (except secondhand, etc). The original ad you bought it from is misdescribed too, but having said that you got it for a reasonable price, the chrome trim isn't that plentiful either.

Thanks Paul for your comments. Anyone out there with a concouse campaign mk1? Info from campaign and Uk "pre campaigns" would be desirable.

Is the grill im selling a true campaign? Has it had other fogs attached to it?

Another more generic way to identify foglights is if the lamp has a "B" code on the lens. You might have a variation on the original lamp, but which is still a foglight.

Oh and welcome to the club! As you'll gather, the Campaign is somewhat surrounded by mystique!

Progress on the case...

Had an irish guy with a dodgey profile win the item! Probably what it deserved. Sean sent threatening emails to me and afjal gave up on me as I doughted him.

No winners, not even the guy who bought it.

I will be posting photos of Seans MK1 Dark Blue GTI so if you see his car at a show you can piss in his fuel flap for me.

Thankyou Afjal for givin your advise. Salt of the Earth.

Thx Moderator dude for your advise, and the techy guy with the code numbers. What baffles me tho is that sean sent me on a wildgoose chase here, yet I got the answer I actually needed to file a complaint on ebay about it. I had a witness present when I bought the item an I can proove its the same item seans missus passed to me at his door in Halifax.

Guess the question is, do i go to the authoritys with the threats and fraud, or do I ring my good friend Bob?

Who's Sean?

Also, you won't get that far in fraud if you're claiming he mis-sold an item, based on an inaccurate description, he'd have to have knowingly misled you. If he was none the wiser, then he can't be pinned down for it. You can decline to buy the item at the point of purchase, if its "not as described" and you could probably recover some money off Paypal if you paid that way too.

Fact is though, (to add even more confusion!) inner fogs aren't a "Campaign" feature - they are a run out 1984 feature, Golf GXs had them. So you cannot even describe the genuine foglights as "Campaign" lights, you could say they are found on Campaign and some other models.

Kinda lucky he hung himself by sending a load of abuse through eBay. Hopefully that beeing reported should get the desired result, a little justice.

Any word on the grill plastic itself? Can that be Identified?

Paul your a star. Cheers for advise.

Misus has been reading his mails and got upset about it and I had to keep her from calling the police. I wanna see what eBay do about it and if he has broken a policy I'll forward that info to the police to support the case.

If a mod here could check this email to see if its registered I can forward the mails he sent through eBay. Pretty sure you'd take action if you read the threats and gutter speaking about my wife.  MK1 owner from Halifax.

I guess if your an eBayer it pays to know whos on the Scam. I now have to find a way to explain this to the new owner without getting negative feedback myself. What an idiot!

mk2 seats

hi mate i bought the mk2 seats off you today well pleased. the head rest i showed you are the same as the seats so will do for the rear I've decided after i got the seats home not to waste my cash just yet by having them recovered in leather as the condition of the seats is better than i thought i have managed to loosen the cover where the bolster was worn on the drivers side and re foamed it its now the right shape
the only problem i might have is the fitting of the rear seat in my cabby but I'm sure i can sort it some how
once again thanks for the seats you are a true gent and hope to see you soon when i get back on the road  perhaps at some meet.
cheers Andy..

Dont ask what your club can do for you, but what can you do for your club?

Theres got to be a guide here for modding the rear bench to work. Have you looked at your old rear bench and seen what you can salvage from that to put on the MK2 bench? Any time I get something liek this i get both old and new part and side by side them. You'll need the arms from the Mk1 bench welded onto the MK2 bench. Youll need a securing eye swap and then youll have to see about how the backs lock into the car. The mech's are similar. If you manage it mate post a photo of your progress through it, Id like to learn a bit from your experiance. heheheh
