New Member, Advice Needed on Mk1 Cab!

Hi All,

Thanks for reading my post.  I am looking at buying a 1984 Mk1 Golf cabriolet and have found a nice condition white model with a Clipper bodykit, new hood and leather interior.
I am however, a little confused over the spec that the owner gave me and wonder if you guys may be able to help me out.
The owner has said that it is originally from the US (LHD) but has no aircon or a third brake light.  He has said it is a 1.6 injection engine and is a 'GTI'.  The wheels are not standard, so I couldn't identify it from them either.
Basically I am trying to work out what model it actually is.   Am I right in thinking that the Clipper model is carb only?  Plus all the GTI cabby's I have seen are 1.8's!  Anyone know anything about the US versions?
Also, just to make this a little more challenging, I live in Greece, so this could be a Euro model of some kind!  I started out trying to find performance figures etc, and found I couldn't even identify the car!

Any help would be greatly appreciated as it's quite a nice car!

Hi and welcome

Not sure if this is any help what so ever but I was under the impression that US spec Mk1's (and Cabs) came with square headlights and had huge indicator/reflectors on the front wings  :dontknow:

thought it was worth a mention, and am sure someone here will confirm or say I'm talking rubbish (like I usually do  ).. can you get any pics of the cabby?

also, If you can get the VIN number I'm sure this will help define it's model etc.

Hi Phill,

Thanks for your reply.  This model has twin round front headlights, no running lights and normal rear light clusters.  I forgot to mention that it is badged as a Golf rather than a Rabbit…guess it is leaning towards being a euro model huh!

I will try to get the VIN when I drive it later in the week, have only seen the outside and spoken over the phone with the owner so far.

Any other ideas anyone?

As far as I know:
The Rabbit' had air con, large side repeaters forward of the front wheels, opening front quarterlights, and the bumper mounts incorporated 'shock absorbers', and was definitely badged 'Rabbit'.

Here is a Euro version with big bumpers and the large repeaters:

Very early cars were 1.6 ltr.
The Clipper is 1.8 carb, but the '88 and later GTI came with the Clipper kit.
Earlier cars had small bumpers.

Owning a Mk1 cabby is a vertical learning curve…
