New here; seeking advice for Mk1 restoration

:D

Hi,

I'm new to your forum.  I'm the 3rd owner of a 1983 1800cc Mk1; I've owned it since 1987 & its done 157,000 mls without too much problem.  Although much of the bodywork is still good, there is some heavy rusting around the wheel arches, rear quarter, tailgate & one of the sills.  Interior is pretty clean, but could do with some parts replacing too.  I'm after some advice on restoration to help me work out how to proceed;

Unfortuantely, I don't have time to restore it myself, so I'm looking for advice/recommendations about restoration specialists & costs….

Can you recommend any Mk1 (or, at least, VW) restoration specialist, (ideally located in the South East but not essential..)

Have you restored your Mk1 recently? - how much did it cost? what were the pitfalls?!

Haven't worked out how to attach pictures yest, but when I have; will add..

Thanks.

Hi and welcome! It will be costly if you pay someone else to do it, that's for sure. There are a number of people here though who may be able to help.

You could try Crazyquiff (banner link bottom left) He's in Wallingford, Oxfordshire. If you are paying someone to do it for you then there wont be many pitfalls, just the cost! Just need to find someone you can trust.

Look forward to seeing some pics

Cheers
Andy

Welcome aboard

the question how much, is like asking how long is a piece of string!!
its almost impossible to judge how much work needs till it starts, you dont know whats hiding under the arches

Worth checking out the projects section and see how people get on.

also, look through the garages section for links to reliable people, ask questions and do your research before handing over your carto anyone tho…

Get some pics up tho so we can see what you've got

Pics of Mk1 needing resotration

Guys,

Thanks for your responses.

Have attatched below link to a few pictures of my Mk1.  As you can see; clean, but some wear & tear after 157,000 miles!!

I realise it's impossible to scale how big a job this is just from photos, but any further input & recommendations would be very welcome.

Rear arches and corner obviously need doing - will look worse than now when you strip the car! Take a peek at my resto link in my sig, latest I'm on is rear corner so may help?

At the mileage cylinder head may need refurb but bottom end should be good for another 100k miles.

All depends on price of this car and what end state you want it in - daily runner or concours. You could easily spend ?5k doing it yourself if the latter.

Maybe pop along to one of the regional meets for ideas and inspiration!

Good luck and keep us posted
