New Girl...be gentle!

Hello peeps!

Altho new to the watery side and Mk1's I am not new to the Dub scene and thought I'd say how do!

I have just been lucky enough to get myself a mega-bargain of a Mk1 GTi…1982, 1600 new VEGE engine, stock, Oak Green from factory and a touch rare for a Mk1 with only about 5 having been made in that colour (or so I am led to believe)  :o   :D

It's been owned by the same man for 23 years having had 2 very brief owners in the first 6 months of it's life.  He's loved and cherished everything but the body work so I now have a bit of work to do in tidying the old boy up.  He has 2 NOS wings to go on, a new-ish scuttle courtesy of crazyquiff and is going in for a little bit of light cosmetic work in the very near future!  8)

I also own a 1972 bright orange bug (which recently gave a performance on Blue Peter) and compared to the bug my new GTi is like trying to attempt the land speed record….and I LOVE it!

The GTi was also manufactured on my birthday only a few decades *cough cough* later than me!

So enough waffle…here's a few pics of my much loved new speedy babe!

Note the other half ready to kick the tyres!

Cheers guy!

Loving the waterpumper experience as it's completely different from the aircooled one!  One hell of alot faster too!

Got trouble in deciding what to register the GTi under tho…it's not an 1800 so it's not a campaign…I know it's not a cabriolet as that's blatant  8O …it was registered after 1980 so it's not a series 1…butthe chassis number isn't AW prefix so I am a bit lost like!

Anyone got any clues?  :dontknow:

Hi and welcome.

Great looking GTI there, alwasy look good in balck. You should register it under the series 2 section. Series 1 (up to 1980) can be identified by the small rear lights among other things. The 1600 GTI engine carried over into the series 2 GTI for a year (1980-81) before inxcreased to 1800. Mines a 1981 series 2 1600 like yours, should have a BW or CW chassis.

Cheers

Hi and welcome to The Club.

That car looks awfully familiar….those extra Bosch lamps under the bumper, Oak Green 1600, old chap owned it for ages……there was a car like that in Hythe, always admired it but never got to chat to him (with a view to get 'first offer' on it, now it's 'disappeared'…….

Owning a Mk1 cabby is a vertical learning curve…

Welcome aboard!

Oak Green Mk1s  :y: Rare as hens teeth, very nice though. There was one at our Gaydon meet last year.

Sounds likes a nice example, and thanks for the pics.

Cheers,

Drew.

Hi and welcome, lovely looking GTI there, never knew they were available in oak green - is it an import? Your other-half looks a bit suspicious of the new fangled technology - got its engine in the front and has a radiator 8O

Thanks for the welcome guys!  :D

As far as I can tell, the car was built on 1.2.82, collected from Germany on 6.3.82 and registered 2 days later in the UK.  So I guess it is an import!

The 'old chap' I bought it from lived in East Finchley.

Markwon…altho the GTi's look good in Black, they look even better in OAK GREEN!

PhillT…I was gonna wait til the end of the year and pay for a whole 12 months membership instead of 4 months worth!  Also I will be coming back from Cornwall on the 28th!  :banghead:  :|

Jenny - Entry to Gaydon only was ?10 last year. This year it's still only ?10 but you get 4 months FREE membership AND a FREE club sticker :y: …and hey, Gaydon isn't that far from Cornwall!! (There's too many people now want to see the Oak Green MK1!!)

  Hmmm when you put it that way…
trouble is I am going to Cornwall tomorrow so there's no chance of me coming home to London in the bug, picking up my club membership details and entry to Gaydon and going all the way back down to Cornwall in the GTi just so I can come to the show!  8O

Also my baby is gonna get a face lift before gracing the show scene…new front wings, scuttle and paintwork refreshed where needed!

It's not a cop out, honest!  I would love for everything to fall into place nicely but not this time sadly!  :(

You will all ave to be a tad patient please!    :tlc: Thanking you all!

Yes just realised must have made up to mid 82 as all X reg GTI's I've seen are 1600 (even seen a few late registered ones on Y plate) Not seen any X reg 1800's  :?

Nice Mk1 you got there jenny,Not seen an oak green before looks nice. And dont let the BF drive it, there wont be a tyre tread left otherwise.

If ya see a white cabrio whilst in sunny cornwall beep yer horn! Probs it be me. Often in Newquay at maccy dees with the local boy racers.
I live in plymouth at the mo but hopefully moving back to my home land of pasties soon. Dont just love country lanes. I know the MK1 does.
