New cab owner needing advice..... and parts. (theft damage)

Hi everyone, first time on here.

I collected my MK1 Golf Cab yesterday, its an 1800cc on an F plate, unfortunatly, i bought it from a friend and before i collected it, it got broken into, not satisfied with cutting the roof to try to gain entry they smashed both rear windows, damaged the dash surrounding the sterio and smahed through the parcel shelf to gain entry to the boot.

it needed a new roof anyway (i already have a mohair one on order) so i got the car for £600, the previous owner bought it for £800 4 months ago and spent a couple of hundred doing minor engine repairs, he has since bought a BMW 330, its costing more to run than expected so working on the golf is out of question for him and my g/f is learning to drive so the golf is perfect for us.

I've been out in it all day and gave it a quick clean inside and this is what i've noticed is wrong so far and would like some advice on;

Where to get a new water pump (squealing on idle), rear windows, door cards, speedo (speedo/miles not working, revs ok), rear view morrors missing too.

Its lumpy/juddery on idle and is running very rich, i assume this is a timing issue?

The previous owner tells me it has a problem with the thermostat/carb causing it to over rev on idle when warm, does anyone have experiance of this, its also leaving carbon on the spark plugs (apparently) causing it to misfire.

I've not had chance to get under the hood much yet, from a quick check over the visible engine components all look in very good condition but the engine is a little rough and a bit of tapit rattle.

Anyone got any advice that would help me with any of this it'd be appreciated.

Hi mate and welcome,
Send a pm to funkstar on here. He usually has parts going and is very helpfull and knowledgable too.
You can post up in the technical section regarding the engine running issues.
Did they cut all the way through the hood?
It's a big job to strip all the roof down and make back up but is worth it.

thanks for the tips guys

they sliced the roof, realised it wasnt gona be easy to get through so smashed the windows, not sure why they did both tho, the cut was taped up but ripped more on the motorway today so the roofs getting done as soon as it arrives. Not too worried about doin it myself, been workin on motors since i was 17, 26 now had an old polo for my first car. Found a good guide, so should be ok, i hope.

i'm currently modyfying a 2.0 turbo astra mk4 for performance and this is gona be done more for looks, want a nice subtle standard look and quite lookinforward to working on some old school engineering and restoring it.
