New Boy Needs Advice

Hi people,i'm selling my mk4 to start a mk1 project.I'm looking to fit a mk16valve engine, what parts do i need from the mk2? Is it just the engine and gearbox?
I will get the bodywork sorted and resprayed, and will have ?1000 for the engine, what sort of power could i achieve with that amount of cash.I have a seperate budget in mind for the exhaust etc..

welcome to the site my advise is PM Paul_c i think he has done this very thing and he has a vast knowledge on the mk1 and fitting engine bits, what he don't know aint worth bothering with.

Dont ask what your club can do for you, but what can you do for your club?

Ummmm there's quite a lot. Also you'll need a couple of bits which are custom, like the exhaust manifold. I did a conversion with a 2.0 16V from a Passat, which meant that I had to source a lot of bits & bobs from a Golf mk2 16V, so you're doing the right thing by starting out with the whole car.

Off top of head, but don't quote me on it:

Engine
CLutch/flywheel
All the inlet manifold, induction system, inc metering head
wiring loom for ignition, including its ECU

You have to swing across the fuel lines from one side of the car to another, and clip them on into their new location. Also you have to relocate the washer bottle. Clutch is done by using the 16V pressure plate and 8V friction disc, feeding into the original gearbox (tho many people have swapped for a Mk2 gearbox with 100mm flanges. If you go for the 16V box, you need to match the friction disc too, since it has a 24mm input shaft compared to the others' 22mm).

I ended up replacing a lot of parts too - radiator, upgraded oil coolers, engine mounts, igintion ECU, coil, starter motor, etc which really added to the costs. Also I had a lot of the stuff powder coated, and rebuilt the top end of the engine.

There's a FAQ somewhere - PM ManicGTI who maintains it, he can email it to you.
