New Boy...

Hello there people,

My name is Seba and i'm from Kent! (apparently, they called it the garden of england?!? dont know why!) I was invited to join this site by one of you (sorry cant remember who) a while ago, whilst bidding on a mk1 on ebay sometime last yr!

For a long time now i have been obsessed with mk1's, ever since seeing my mates g60 conversion fly past my house day after day! but it wasn't just the speed of his that got me hooked, it was the shape of them, the lines, the hidden attitude they have everything about them! i've been looking for one of my own for a while now, and have just found what i think may be the steal of a century!

On tuesday night i won on ebay a 1982 1.1 mars red golf mk1! (yes, get in!) for the small sum of…wait for it….?86! I'm off to pick it up tomo. there doesn't appear to be that much wrong with it, i little rust at the bottom of the doors, and round the back at the bottom of the bumper.

My plan for my mk1 is to put a bigger engine in it and put on some smart alloys, and thats about it. i want to keep its naturally good looks, and not hide them behind huge, ugly, pieces of ego enhancing body kits!

any suggestions as to what engine would work well, and be easy to fit (as i am learning on the job, so to speak). i was wondering whether a mk2 engine would work!? and where abouts is the best place to look, and get it fitted!?

Thanks very much for listening

Seba

Hi Seba,

Welcome aboard. Sounds like a nice bargain you've got yourself.

As for engines, the 1.3 engine from the Golf is a straight swap and will give you another 10 bhp, but the 'gem' you're looking for if you can find one is the 1.3 'GT' engine from the Mk3 Polo. This punches out 75bhp as standard and can be tuned for much more. If you want to go completely mad you can also slot in the G40 supercharged engine, but this would be considerably more involved.

The big block engines are a possibility too, but you need to relocate the engines mounts and a few others things to get them to work well.

A couple of guys on here have done some great stuff with the the 'little' Golfs and I'm sure they'll be along in a while.

Nothing wrong with Kent, quite a few of us on here from thereabouts. I live in Kingnorth, just south of Ashford! How about you?

Cheers,

Drew.

hello again,

thanks for the tips on the engines, i've already been looking around for the polo ones, would love a g40, but beggars cant be choosers!

If anyones on here has an engine going spare, please let me know! anything really, the polo gt's or g40, or 1.6's or 1.8's!

Ashford, think thats on the other side of Kent from me! i'm over in Edenbridge, not too far from Tonbridge.

As im looking to put a bigger engine into my 1.1, can anyone recommend the Haynes manual i should be looking at getting hold of! (still learning!)

thanks

Seba

Hi Seba and welcome

There are two Haynes for the mk1 (1100-1300 and 1500-1800) and the Haynes Golf restoration manual. If you are looking into bigger engines, engine modification or more power you should read this book. Just got it - very informative even if you do not want to modify as it explains what golfs have to offer in standard form, how it works, the pros and cons and then how that can modified.

Cheers
