New and confused

Hi folks,

Am toying with the idea of buying a nice and original MK1 GTi, but don't know VWs very well.
I've always fancied one since I used to drag my poor father into the local VW garage when I was 9.

Can any of you nice people give me a couple of pointers as to what to look for in a future purchase?
It won't be a daily driver, and whilst I do love to tinker, fettle and generally get mucky with my cars(!), I don't really have the space to take on big jobs; so if you also know any specialists in my area (Herts) that would be even better!
