Morning Folks

Hi everyone

Just joined a few days ago and this is my first post introducing me and my GTi.

A little history of my car:
I bought my 1983 Golf GTi in January 1994, a year before my son was born. It had covered just 52000mls.

I am the 3rd owner after it was dealer supplied it as a company car to a salesman. He did 26000 miles in 1 year and chopped it in for a MK2 (bet he was disappointed?)

The dealer then sold it to guy who bought it as a gift for his retired wife. She only ever went to the shops 4 miles away. She after about a year took it back to the garage to find out why the MPG gauge wasnt working. They couldn't find fault. It transpired that she had never used 5th gear! She racked up just 26000 miles in 9-1/2 years.

Today the mileage is just over 108000. She runs very nicely and is in good order (couple of niggles) AND totally original other than the front 2 piece spoiler, where I was ripped off by some numpty on eBay.

This car has NEVER been run over 3000rpm until there is an oil light reading on the MFA display.

A few scratches here and there, the usual and still a couple of slights dints that I inherited from the previous owners.

So now its MOT time. The car has been idle for 5 years and required brake service, a couple of relays, bulbs, exhaust rubbers. I am also replacing the full set of tyres (slight cracks on 2).

I do have 2 slight issues however and wondered if anyone could quickly comment?

1. Brake pedal not returning properly. I have full bled the brakes with new fluid.

2. Front wipers not working. The motor has power and gets hot but just wont operate the wipers. Is it possible the linkages have siezed?

So when I get the MOT this week I shall insure (any ideas of best place?) and enjoy. The only thing to do after that is a spray job (original colour) and peel the door card coverings, replace the hardboard & foam and recover.

THEN I WILL DRIVE TO MEET YOU LOT.

My son loves the car, I think he wants it! Mind you many a time when he was a babay I used to drive him in it to get him off to sleep in the early hours of the morning………Oooh MEMORIES eh.

Right must have bored you lot now so will get outside and wash her.

Not sure about brake pedal but think there are some springs pulling pedal back, are they still present and correct? Are all the pivots and cranks free on the gubbins that transfer the pedal motion across to the master cylinder?

Remove wiper mechanism, two nuts on wiper arm shafts and a couple holding motor and linkage to bulkhead, make sure its all free and grease spindles when reassembling. If motors getting power (and hot!) but not moving would have thought a fuse would have popped?

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Thanks guys, will post pics ASAP.

Have sorted the wipers out now after pulling it partially apart. There was a broken magnet and a piece had caught in the windings and broken an armature wire. Picked up the whole mechanism locally for £40 and fitted last night - BINGO!!

Brakes, well a little miffed, all springs in place. There is a 3rd bleed nipple on the master cylinder which aparently needs bleeding too, so will try it later.

Also managed to pick up a fuel pump cradle which my garage lost when they fitted the pump back, holding it with 2 tie wraps.

So, set of tyres now and off to the MOT station.
