Mk1 Golf 1.5 5 Speed

Hi im looking at buying a Mk1 golf 1.5 5 speed not sure if its a CL or what (maybe someone can tell me)

What im after is a few things to look out for i.e places for common rust, the car already ahs 12 months MOT on it but i just want to make sure she will last a few more years.

And if anyone knows of any common engine problems with the 1.5 id be most greatful, will be viewing car next week

not sure on the model but common rust areas to look out for are, from front to back:-

edges of front panel where the wings meet
top edge of inner wings
below the windscreen
sills
rear arches (GTIs worse because of the plasstic spats) inner and outer
rear axle mounting points
filler neck area
rear seat belt mounts
spare wheel well
lower section of the rear panel
screw holes for rear license plate

oh, and if there's a sunroof.. around that and the drain holes

check around the lower edge of the doors and rear hatch too and have seen rust around the rear quarter windows too

think that covers all the areas of possible rust

CAN ANYONE POINT ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION WITH ANY COMMON ENGINE PROBS THE 1.5 HAS IM ASSUMING IT A CARB ENGINE

I had a 1.5 GL years ago with auto-choke and it was a nightmare, forever in the garage is idling problems - like 2500 rpm on cold tickover! 8O

I'm not saying that they all do this but when you view ask if you can see the car started from cold (feel the engine 1st to ensure it is cold!) and after test drive when at normal temp, try a hot start and make sure this is ok and idle.

Idle when warm should be around 850-900 rpm mark.

Re the model, I'd guess it's a GL but just check the badge on the back!

THAT HELPS LOADS GUYS, THE CAR HAS 12 MONTHS AND 5 MONTHS TAX AND HE'S ASKING ?300 FOR IT IVE HAD A QUICK LOOK ROUND IN THE DARK AND THE BODY LOOKS CLEAN FROM THE OUTSIDE

ILL GO HAVE A CLOSER LOOK NEXT WEEK AND LET YOU KNOW HOW IT IS RUST AND ENGINE WISE
