MK1 clipper cabriolet

im 16, and driving in a few long long months!
anyway
i really REALLY want a mk1 cab as my first car, have found some amazing ones, lightly modded albeit, and im determined to get my hands on one,
preferably like this;
Used cars for sale - PistonHeads UK
that is EXACTLY what i want.
my old man has said he'll help me buy a CAR.
not sure how he'll take this.
i can't wait to get a golf, having been into them since i was a kid when my dad had a 'rocco!
so basically,
i want to try and pursuade him to help me buy THAT car.
NOW!
any ideas or experiences yous could share?
insurance also,
is it likely to be hard?
thanks in advance
TOM[eagerly awaiting Mk1!] :D

Welcome Tom, Insurance will be high i would have thought, try and go for a standard golf cab and insurance companies may like you a bit more, i have a 1.6 auto and 34 years old and its still dear enough for insurance thats garaged as well with limited mileage, have a good look around.hope this helps.

KIDS EH!!!!

Welcome Tom, nice to see you've set the bar at a reasonable height!!!  8O
I've a standard '89 Clipper Cab 1.8 carb, immobiliser, garaged, 4 yrs no claims, used daily and it's just under ?300/year fully comp. Do you REALLY want to pay more per year for insurance than you did for the car???  :?  If you're so keen to 'av a Mk1 try and get your hands on a tidy SMALL engined tin top and build up trust with the insurers. Learn how to look after it etc and what's involved. When the time's right sell the tinnie and upgrade. Can't fault your ambition tho'. Took me 16years from driving a MK I Cab to owning one.  8O  8O
Regards
Chris
PS If your Dad does stump up for one, any chance he'll stretch to a G60 conversion for mine

I no longer have the Mk1!! I now whizz round in a Black 1990 3dr Mk2 GTi 8v but the roof doesn't fold back when the sun shines :o

 Oh yeh i have full no claims from the age of 17 as well, kavlfc is right really dont set your heart on a cabby and be dissapointed, i wanted one from when i was 16 my sis used to have tin top gti's, go for a smaller engined one for a start it will make more sense imo.look in the for sale section on this forum there is some nice ones in there.

thanks for all the advice lads!
really appreciate it,
considering that im thinking of either a 1.4 standard engined cab, or a '91 tin top mk 1 :?

Hi Tom,

Im 23 and just bought an L-Rivage Gti and found putting your parents on your insurance reduces the premium substantially, the pass plus is about a ?100 and also knocks off another 10 ish % so maybe worth a shot as well!!  Best of luck mate.

ps try elephant.co.uk as well

Hi Tom,

I use Elephant too and they've always been the cheapest for me - definitely agree with Douglas about putting one / both of your parents on the policy as a named driver - knocks LOADS off!

GOOD LUCK!
