Rust in he tank/timing out try these they might work, my mate had one that kept overheatin we changed all sorts of thermo sensors/switches on the rad on the engine and it turned out to be the rubber seal on his header tank had an air leak and it kept getting up to pressure and blowing it out, new seal and job sorted  :D

alrite buddy we have changed thermo what happens is she ticks over fine then you leave it ticking over for about 10 nmins with filler cap off and she starts bubbling fan does nt cut in either would  this stop it boiling over just seems a bit quick to start boiling over cheers then when you turn engine off it dont shut down

Split out your faults and post questions in the relevant technical sections - or better still, try out the search feature. It seems (correct me here) you have at least 3 problems:

1. Overheating with fan not cutting in
2. Not turning off when the key is turned to stop
3. Cutting out at random intervals

Could well be the fan not workin but if you do as paul c has suggested it will get you the right answers to each question, give it a go first  :)

has anybody worked on/ moved anything recently on the car ? if dizzy has been turned could change timing which  cause it to overheat, not run right.  good luck i'm sure you will get to the right answer in the end, forget smarties mk1 owners have the answer.   :)
