Just got my first VW Cabby (1991)!

Hi,

So a new chapter has begun and found this forum full of useful information. So as a noob of MK1 I'm exciting learning all I can about this beaut. ;)Here's a picture under the hood and not sure what's stock and what's been fixed. Car runs great so far but needs some TLC of the electrics and lights.

The power steering doesn't engage on low speeds like when you want to parallel park.

Any suggestions what to look into overall?

The interior need some fixing and if someone could point me into the right direction to find the needed clips to attach the door top mouldings that would be much appreciated.

Also the head unit doesn't turn it self off when I turn off the ignition. Any ideas?

Maybe better to post these as individual questions but a bit excited to start working on this.

Oh and here's a pic of the car ;)

Hi and welcome!

Very few RHD cars came with the digifant engine.

No RHD cars came with power steering - well a few specialised dealer conversions, but not factory.

The head unit is just probably wired to permanent live, you need to change it to ignition live. Some people prefer it that way, enabling them to have the stereo on without the ignition.

Have a look at our advertisers - ClassicVW are great for well priced parts and hard to find parts.

Cheers,
Ade

Thanks! So I have a digifant engine? Anything I should check about engine? Right now I'm checking all the grounds as a start.

Ok you have the Classic line model which was the European/USA  version of the Rivage here in the UK.
Later cars were fitted with JH or 2H. Engine.
Look for the boot sticker on the rear beam. If it’s there it will tell you engine code.

Yours is a left hand drive.
You should have 4 panel leather gear knob, handbrake cover, leather wrapped steering wheel, leather gear gaitor.
Power windows, power top.
And heated seats.
These were the run out model before the MK3 became out.

The door cappings are glued on. There’s a lip that goes under the upper seal that runs along the door top.

Cool, yes it's a LH, imported from Germany.
Got some of the mentioned but no power roof or power windows. It's an automatic which I wonder if it was fitted with after since when looking up the VIN it's says 5 gear manual.

Is there any how to or illustrations of this that someone has posted already or is it straight forward?

Glue in place clamp up.
I did these on mine a while ago.

If your car is post 1990 I’m surprised if it came with manual top though.
Without seeing the car it could be that someone removed the hydraulic setup and changed frames. I’ve seen it an awful lot.
