Just bought a mk1 diesel in Australia

Post

Back to the top
Just bought a 1981 mk1 4 door diesel sight unseen from over 1000km away.

Getting it shipped up to me in a few days, will be interesting to see what shape it's in!

Look forward to cutting my teeth in the vw world with this thing.

Thanks guys, I'm from sydney, I got the car from geelong victoria.

Picked it up today on my lunch break and got it back to work. Got going on the road no worries, tried to open the drivers door quarter window and it ended up in my hand which was interesting, ha. Can anyone recommend the right adhesive to fix that?

Placed it on the floor as the light went green to get going again in the traffic. A little bit further up the road it started to rain so put the wiper stalk on, wipers not working :Sdoh.

Tested horn, no worky. Stereo - no worky (haven't investigated this much yet). But managed to get it back to work so praying for no rain on the way home tonight (only 13km's so here is hoping).

Here are the pics that I saw before buying

I have a few questions if anyone can answer them easily;

1. Can the door locks be replaced? (without replacing the whole handle)
2. Can you purchase a complete lock set from anywhere? (doors, hatch & ignition barrel) Any links?
3. Can you still buy the quarter window latches? (my front one is missing completely)
4. Is it feasible to bolt a very small turbo onto this motor running very low boost? Will the standard diesel pump be able to get enough fuel in? Will the oil pump be able to feed enough oil for the turbo to? (I'm after more torque, not power).
5. Is there a 5 speed gearbox conversion available? What fits?
6. Who does suspension kits for these things? I'm interested in a bolt in solution if available, would like to lower it a few inches.

Thanks for all the help!

also, have a look at crazyquiffs. there should be a link on the homepage of this site.

Thanks for the information and replies guys.

I found the missing latch from the drivers quarter window in the glovebox so that was handy, will see about what glue to use to get it reattached.

Got the stereo working and came with a bob marley cd [score :)]

Plans for the car are fit a front 2 piece mk1 spoiler which I had for my datsun funnily enough, lower it a little bit and find a set of rims. Thinking Mk2 slotted wheels if I can find a set, or BBS mesh if they come up.

Later on would be nice to add some strut braces and look at possibly suspension options. This will be my daily driver so may steer away from coilovers and look at upgraded shocks/springs instead.

One thing I do like are the original VW luggage racks, and after watching a few sell over here for over $300 AUD, I've decided to make my own, I'll copy the design below which are off an old beetle;

I have some 16mm tube steel I got off my friend, so I'm going to see if I can use a plumbers pipe bender to bend the 4 curves. Hardest part is finding a supplier for the suction caps! If you know any suppliers let me know as I have searched everywhere.

Have a word with Crazyquiffs mate. Number on their website. They might be able to point you in the right direction.

Nice idea for the roofrack. Good luck with it.  :thumbs:
