Introducing Helga and owner from Kent

Hi All,

I stumbled upon this site when I was googling to find out how to put back my drivers seat sliding mechanism back together (had a spare bolt, and I couldn't figure out where I had removed it from. Figured now. Cheers!).

I have owned loads of Golfs, in all Marks 1 through to 5, alas, the Golf that is lovingly referred to as Helga is with me forever. She has managed to successfully get me around the Nurburgring, been the car that I jumped into when leaving ex-boyfriends, and the car that I turn to when I changed jobs or don't have a company car to drive about in. When trying to get through northern France, she failed to stop when an 'would-be' illegal immigrant tried to escape and ran in front of us on the motorway leading Calais. We still have the battle scars from that incident. In short, she is old faithful. We've been through far too much together to ever part company.

She is a '89 GTI convertible in white with a black hood. My only issue is that she's an Automatic, but even that is something that as I get older, I'm kind of prefering as well!

About me… well I was a teacher, but now I am a Law student and private tutor. I have two children, aged 3 and 9.

It's all about Helga…

Well I haven't driven her for over a year, but today I spent all day working under the bonnet and stripped out the interior and gave it a massive scrub in the sunshine. I've dropped it off at the garage and it's going for an MOT in the morning. My suspicion is that she may need the brakes checking, but we'll see…

Thanks for the welcome. Once I get her back I'll take some photos. In the meantime, these are some pics from when we hit the fella on the motorway in France…

Luckily he survived (which is incredible given that I hit him at 70mph!) It doesn't show in the pictures, but the bonnet was also caved in and the side of the windscreen (the metal support) was all bent in too.

And in case you were wondering, the name HELGA is in honour of Private Helga Geerhart of Allo Allo. Another damn sexy German Female…

It's all about Helga…

personaly i hate personalised plates for my self, but i would say to anyone who's thought about it or looked into it, you clearly like the idea go for it, i wish i could be brave enough to make that can't of choice becuase i know every 5 mins i would think what if i had something like m1nty or part of my name followed with 999 or even something less personal it an endless battle for me to decide so its not for me so its a hate love thing going on for me so its easyier for me to hate it then like for my self

Oh yeah forgot the question…. I wouldn't have a private plate on a mk1 but I would have one on a newer car (which I have).  I like the lidea of the number plate being old too….
