Might as well get the first post out of the way in the proper place - new to the world of Mk1s, and looking forward to buying a proper VW. Just about to move from my horror of a polo GTi (?2.5k down the drain in a year ) I bought a newer car for reliability and something tells me I shouldn't have bothered.. at least with a Mk1 there's a good reason if it goes wrong! Looking to be buying late spec 1.8 8v 5spd, pref Lhasa or black - must be standard or damn close.

If there are going to be problems i'd prefer mechanicals or electrics rather than a rotten body as it'll be a daily driver and I can't be doing with filler and sprayshops!

Planning on chrome bumpers and rubbing strips, polished p slots with the inside of the wheel and Ps in gloss black. Sort the ride height out and off she goes (basically i'm not doing anything that can'tt be reversed to sell it as a clasic if needs be)

I figure I'm gonna go for a good one to start off, saves money in the long run. Don't know if I fancy trying a restoration for my first Mk1 (that'll be the second car once i'm happy with the first   )

Any advice on specialists to buy from in the midlands.. At the moment i'm looking at volksdragon or wagenwheels but don't fancy the drive

Oh, and i'm planning on spending about ?2k - ?2.5k.
