Hello! Just decided to make myself known since I've been lurking around these parts for a wee while now.

Don't own a Mk1 (yet) but fancy a cabby for some weekend fun. We'll I was actually going to buy a 205GTi as a nostalgia trip as it was the first car i bought myself but my wife has told me that i actually want a mk1 (she has good taste, she married me ;)). I had a Mk2 8v many many years ago followed by a mk3 16v so not a complete new comer to VWs or the Golf.

Anyway, this forum is helping to push me in the Mk1 direction purely due to the wealth of knowledge and helpful nature of the members when it comes to advice and parts for each others cars.

I've joined the Scottish region (live just outside Glasgow) and will be scullking around the for sale section looking for a car. Hope to make a purchase in the next month or so, happy to travel if i can work out how to transport a car (for all those non MOT'd ones).

hello there and welcome to the forum. Good luck with the unt for MK1. There's a few for sale in the classifieds section.

Had a 205gti a few years ago and loved it. great little cars.

Whereabouts are you located? I have friends that live in Ayrshire and visit them quite regularly.

Hi smudger,

I live in Gourock, work in Glasgow.

Been looking through the for sales. Lots of nice ones but haven't contacted anyone. I started out not too fussy but have now started to get a bit more fussy about model, colour etc. Then i have my rather poor budget of around £1k to deal with. Realistic about expectations for this though and a little work doesn't scare me. if anything it's what i want. Just the logistics of anything further than pushing distance from my house are a bit patchy at the moment. I have a car that i can tow with but no trailer so will need to ask a few friends in the motor trade or figure where i can hire a transporter. unless I'm lucky enough to find something road worthy of course.

I think for your budget you will be lucky to find a runner but you never know especially if you are fussy about what you want.

Best of luck with the search matey.

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your search.

As smudger says if you're not too fussy you should get a reasonable cabby for that.

Thanks for all the welcomes.

Dec, had a read through your latest build thread. Very impressive end result. I was trying to place the location from some of the outside shots but wasn't really sure. Looks like somewhere around the east end/port as i think i spotted the flats that have just been demolished in one shot.

For some reason there seem to be quite a few pram tops for sale on the east coast (fife, edinburgh, livingston) at the moment. Hopefully the search isn't going to take too long, there seems to be a lot more choice than there is if I wanted a tin top.

Plan on venturing east this weekend to take a look at this

Seller is a bit vague about what's needed for MOT and that interior would need to go.

Bit of a thread revival but i thought it polite to let those that welcomed me know what happened. Especially as there's still a future plan to join the ranks.

Well a Mk1 cabriolet never happened for me. I looked at a few but nothing felt right and not knowing enough about these particular cars I got cold feet.

In the end the pull of my first love was just too much so I bought a 1.6 205GTi. As I was more familiar with the potential horrors it felt like a safer route as my first real project car. That was back in May. I drove the car for a bit before starting the strip down and rebuild. I've since fully stripped the underside, cutout all the rot and rewelded fresh steel in. I will then be onto rebuilding all the running gear. It's a learning process and a journey of discovery for me and one which I am enjoying.

I do still find myself looking at Mk1 cabs and my wife does keep mentioning them so it does look like I can't get away from the fact that I will be adding one sooner or later. The experience with the 205 should stand me in good stead for being able to deal with another old car… at least that's the plan.
