Welcome - Obviously depends if your talking standard or modified.

If standard then dont expect anything close to the pull of your GTI-R, I've been on the back of a ZXR750 that couldnt keep up with a modded Pulsar from a standing start and the bike hits 60 in around 5/6 secs.

If modded on the other hand - you could look at the 1.8T engine where the sky is the limit really but it will tend to get a bit hairy above 250BHP because they are front wheel drive - but again that can be changed.

I'd say upto 200 BHP is about right for a mk1 when taking into account the power/weight ratio and keeping the basic VW blueprint of the car.  The G60 is a pretty good conversion apparently.

Hope this helps.

I want a go of your car by the way……

The 1.8T 225 engine from the Audi TT and Seat Cupra makes a nice beast for the mk1. As said above, traction becomes the limiting factor.

I've been in a mk1 with the 225 engine and it is almost unusable in the wet, and in the dry will wheelspin in 3rd gear if you're brutal. …

However it would eat a Scooby or Evo for breakfast once you manage the traction.

Of course you can go nutty with major surgery and drop in 4WD, but it's not really the point of a Golf GTI IMHO!

In my view  the right amount of power for a mk1 with a nicely sorted chassis is around 140-150bhp. This gives you a power to weight ratio of around 180bhp/tonne which is enough to frighten Porsche Boxsters, Z4s, R32s etc and you won't be fighting traction problems all the time.

Cheers,

Drew.

cheres lads great info i am problay looking to run around 350bhp atleast traction is not that big of a problem with drag tyres on i olso own a sunny gti fwd with around 450bhp which is a handfull on the road but great fun i dont think a superbike will keep up with my pulsar i have raced honda fireblads on the drag strip and not lost to one yet just look at my time on tjhe drag strip and that will show that there is not much that will catch it from a staning start 0-60 in 3.6sec and a qauter mile in 11.253

cheres lads keep your susgestions coming as i am looking into spending around ?20.000 on the golf engine and transmishion so i want it to shift some
how hard is it to fit all the 4wd running gear into a mk1 golf and what would be the best one to use
i am aiming for aroung 500bhp with 4wd

thanks lads

Very impressive! I know of a chap with a Rivage with the Audi S3 engine conversion, he has 275 bhp and by all accounts is blistering! Is it all about power? Do you not fancy having one completely standard but to your same high standards? 500 bhp is going to split the poor mk1 in half!  8O
Welcome by the way!  :)

nice looking datsun(haha) always been a big fan of these knarly imports. got a dogbox in my racecar (not vw) and it never fails to amaze how quick those clutchless changes can be.
there are a few mk1 4x4 floating around which is abviosley a big job but most parts are vdub sourced (do a search on e38) at the mo biggest vw power is 1.8t with huge turbo etc, seen one producing just shy of 350bhp. there was also a rwd motorbike engined mk1 at this years racecar show. this had a 350bhp turbo hyabusa motor in it and lots of carbon fibre. anyway good luck and keep us informed.
