Hi people!

I've just joined! I want to tell you about my Golf! My name is Darren, I'm 30 years old. I owned a Mk 1 GTI Cabriolet (F reg) about 7 years ago. I saved it from the crusher. It had no seats, bumpers or wheels and had been off the road for five years. I got it for next to nothing, sourced the parts and had it up and running. It had 90k miles on the clock. I owned it for almost a year and covered around 1500 miles. Unfortunately the engine blew up (probably my fault to be honest, i was 23) and it sat for a couple of months, looking rather sorry for itself. I had bought a BMW and the Golf was neglected. It ended up in the Loot (didn't hear of eBay back then) and it sold for ?800 for spares/repair. I'd always regretted selling it, did a search on the dvla site around 2 years ago and found that the last tax expired in Feb 2001. And I've often thought about getting another cabriolet, but I needed to get one as good as my old one.

Anyway, about a month ago I drove down a road in Kent, and saw a breakdown truck on the driveway of a house. On the back of the truck was my old Golf! I knocked at the house, found the bloke "just wanted it shot off the back of his truck". Turns out he picked it up for scrap from the guy i sold it to, who decided he'd had enough of it sitting in his garage.

It's mine again now after giving him some iron money. It hasn't been used since I last owned it, with the mileage at 92,000. And someone has repaired the engine too! Here's the pic:

My missus says all I talk about is Golfs since I got it back. Maybe she's right! Thanks for listening!

Thanks for the welcome guys. It's like a time warp car.. my random stuff in the glove compartment is still in there. There is about 2 scratches which weren't there before. But I've bought an identical colour clipper, (mot failure) and i'm going to make it perfect using some parts from that. Planning on ditching the wheels and putting on some 15" items.. (either RA or Rivage wheels). I took it for it's pre-MOT today, and it just needs a washer pump, a tyre and a battery clamp!

Yeah, the helios blue one.. That's another story! He was scrapping that as well, and wanted iron money for that too. Apparently his son had it for a year or two and lost interest. So I saved that as well. When I've finished the GTI, i'm going to start on that one. It needs a headlight, wing, roof and a bit of tlc but drives lovely. Trying to get my missus to have it, but she's moaning because it's an auto!

I've got 3 Golf Cabriolets now including the scrap one…

i'm not sure yet, did have the kit on ebay, but today after doing some work on the GTI, found one of the arches was split. So, i'm thinking, i'm going to sort the GTI out first, and check the condition of everything before i put it up for sale.

I'll just take everything i can off the donor car!
