hi , i would just like to introduce myself as a new member and my new mk1 gti, Firstly this is the first VW i have owned so knowladge is very limited on all things VW, so was hoping you guys could answer some questions i have. Am more familier with honda vtec engines having owned integra jdm dc2's which i have had 5 off. Only had the car a short while after having an interest in them for many years and being tempted a number of times, love the little thing already, anyway a few pics.

First Integra & favourite one

Last Integra

Now my current wheels

1981 Mk1 Golf GTi (BMW Mini Pepper White)

The car is really great but i have the following questions if any one can help

1) The car seeems to want to understeer very easily it has 14" wheels on at the min, 4 bran new tyres decent brand, standard shocks and cheap lowering springs. Is this normal ? I have ordered some weitec gt coilovers and a front lower strut brace for the car and will then have the alignment set up hopefully this will cure it. Do you think i will benifit from a uprated rear anti roll bar also ?

2) The font door / pull shut handles have come away from there fixings looks like the metal is damaged can this be repaired with a clip or do they need welded back on as the metal seems bent where it attaches to the door.

3) Rear drivers side brake light and front drivers side sidelights are out and brake lights not currently working  tried replaceing the bulbs but nothing any ideas ?

4)Gauges not currently working but think i need the senders and going to use the sump temp sender i think.

5) drivers side window handle not working but easy fix.

6) Also the car takes around 3-5 sec's off turn over to start when cold then starts fine once been running few seconds, K-jet issues or normal ?

Think thats it , great car overall but just few things to look into and it is 30 years old, main aim is to sort out the handling and then fix the niggles then much later look into more power but love the attention the car gets everywhere it goes.

Thanks In advance and good be be a member at last.

Hi there mate and welcome to the forum.

Nice looking MK1 you have got there.

Love the old DC2's, very under-estimated car, loads of fun to drive and revvy engines. Used to own an 03 plate CTR a few years ago. Loved it.
