Hi new cabrio owner

Hi everyone

I am new to the mk1 scene, having just bought a cabrio gti three weeks ago for some fun (at this rate good job it's not my daily driver!!, all will become clear later), firstly would like to say what an excellent web site this is and well worth the ?15 membership to join!!!

Well lets just say my experience so far is proving to be interesting it goes something like this
within a week front nearside wheel lost 3 of its bolts held on by 1 bolt hand tight, recovery job see photo below

Found out once car home the wheel bolts had been stripped out of the hub and wheel bolt holes in alloy's egg shaped. Checked the three other hubs they were not cleaver so off to GSF for what has started a a regular event 4 times in 2 weeks, are all cabrios this expensive !!!

A friend of mine is a VW mechanic, I already owe him alot for the mecanical jobs he has done for me, the list of work completed so far is:-

* 4x hubs & bearings replaced
* Front disc's & pads replaced
* LH & RH Handbreak cables replaced
* Supplied me with a set of 14" oz alloys to replace the egg holed one's
that came on the car.
* Fit CD radio, 4x speakers & new ariel (old one broken)
* Fitted 4 light grill as per standard spec

Outstanding jobs to get done, i also have the MOT due in 2 weeks

* Front anti roll bar bracket replace broken & bush fit
* Rear springs lowered & shocks replace ( frt has already been lowered)
* Set camber & tracking
* Replace disc back plates rotten away!!!
* Fix radiator fan does not cut in and sort why collant is escaping from rubber block that bolts onto the side of the engine block - new fault today this one !!!
* Replace rotten fuel filler neck
* Full fluid & belt service

Well that reads like a never ending list, thought I got the car too cheap, here are some pictures of "BERT" as my children have called it - due to the reg number.

The pictures do make the car look better than it is, amazing does not show one dent up in these pictures.

Look forward to getting involved in the club and meeting some new people.

Welcome to the site, car looks really staright.

like you said time will tell, but a lot of us seem to go through the stage of replacing a few bits.

I think Id get that fuel filler neck replaced sooner rather than latter, rather than wait for it to go. Dont want rust in the fuel.

Ah  nice cabby! I have a white Gti cabby which will soon look very much like yours; I'm having the leaky old white roof replaced with a shiny new blue one, and I have the original white Avus (snowflake) alloys. Good buy you have there.. problems with old cars are inevitable but Bert will  be worth it I'm sure.
