Hi - Mk1 TDI

Hi I'm Tim,
I'm just in the process of getting a mk1 GTI 3 door in light blue with a metal sunroof. Its currently a shell, just nedding two new wings. I plan to put a 1.9 TDI in it from a seat ibiza mk2 complete with dashboard and full loom. The plate on it is A103 XSG.

Hi and welcome! Sounds like a nice project you have there! I know there's at least one Mk1 1.6TD  (Mk2 engine) and one Mk1 1.9TD (Mk3 engine) in the club, and I'm pretty sure there's someone else who's got a later engined TDI. Can't remember the forum name at the mo. The rest of the diesels are bog standard I'm afraid, but we love 'em anyway! Let us know how you get on with the project  :P

TDI In a Mk1

Hi there tromie,My passat cost me 250,It is difficult to guess exactly how much I have spent on the car in total, I did have trouble with the Injection pump I ended up buying a exchange unit which believe me they arn't cheep but I bit the bullit and have no regrets. You must be keen doing the dash ect,My passat was an early tdi M reg It had no imobilizer and a conventional cable driven speedo so less wiring to think about.
I haven't got any build pics but I will be happy to try and answer any questions/problems that you may have or encounter on the way.All the best with the project and again keep us all posted on how it's going.
Cheers Baller :D

Hi guys - I'm pretty confident in what I'm doing and will be using a ibiza mk2 TDI or a polo classic TDI for insurance reasons! Baller, I take it you didn't have to use the passat clocks then and just wire up the dash to the passat fuse box? And finally how long did it take you to complete? Cheers Tim

I have put in the dash from a diesel caddy which has a clock rather than a rev counter but it also had the glow plug warning light being a Diesel.
I then looked in a Diesel manual to find out where on the back of the fuse box the feed came from for the glow plug light and then where it went on the back of the dash.
I wanted mine to look as standard so to keep in character with the car but we are all different and if you want a different dash you go for it,it is just down to personal preference.
As for time scale I didn't keep any records or give myself any time scale I just worked on it abit when I felt like it.
I certainly enjoy driving my car It puts a smile on my face when ever Im in it.
I might have to sell my Mk1GTI as I am now building a kit car, I haven't got the room or in need for three cars :(

Right ok,I just thought of using the ibiza/polo dash because it means I don't have to faff with the wiring and also the shall I'm getting doesn't have a dsh or wiring loom in currently so it was just to make things easier! What Mpg are you getting out of yours?, How much power roughy -is it as fast as your GTI etc? and were there any problems you encountered when building it? And finally did you use an injection fuel tank or not as I've had mixed reports? Cheers Tim

TDI Conversion

As for the fuel tank I used the original 1.5carb tank, you only need a feed and a return. As for fuel consumption 50mpg It doesn't seem to make any difference if I go on a long run or potter around to and frow from work.As for performance It is much as you might expect. The Diesel  pulls better low down you can be more lazy with the gear stick as it has more torque the gti is faster because it has a wider rev range, but the diesel still goes well, there is not alot in it but they are totaly different to drive.
I had a bit of fun with the exhaust down pipe as it comes out sideways from the manifold,it comes out obout 8 inches then turns back on itself
going down making sure you cleer the gear linkage[in all gears] on the way down, there is not alot of room.
Hope this might help Baller :D

Cheers Baller, I'll stop pestering you now and ask questions when I get the build thread going! Regarding the manifold crispy 8v on Club Gti used another vag manifold to get round the downpipe problem. Less restrictive too!

What exhaust manifold do you plan on using what model car did it come off? Haven't any probs with mine but be handy to know for the future.

I've pm'd crispy 8v to find out but using a seat ibiza anyway I imagine that the manifold will be quite tight to the block anyway due to their engine bays being pretty small. I'll post back up when I get a message back. And I'm getting the shell ready for twoing tomorrow!
