A lot of people remove it in an atttempt to make the engine bay look smoother…

check out this thread and you'll see that they've done it..

Hi,that car seems oddly familiar, did you buy from the London area? :)

Speeding is like masturbation, everyone does it ,but it's not something you should record and put on the internet!!

hi mate, welcome to mk1 golfs and the site.
:)

the section that has been removed/replaced is not structural, so don't worry. it only effects the look of the engine bay.

It IS structural, well structural enough to affect the handling, but you should still pass the MoT with it missing. It acts as a cross brace for the suspension, separates the cabin air ventilation from the engine bay, and in a similar vein acts as an additional protection in the event of an engine fire.

Plenty people remove it for vanity reasons, though…..

…isn't the chassis number stamped on this also ????

Owning a Mk1 cabby is a vertical learning curve…

if your worried about its structural integrity fit a strut brace might help hold things together??

Dont ask what your club can do for you, but what can you do for your club?

Yep, according to the thread Lawsy posted earlier it is

I think i will go hunting for a mk1 that is getting broken and see if i can cut it out and replace it, except then its going to have the wrong number stamped… O buggerit!

I dunno now.
guess strut brace…
