Hi i need a little advice before starting my restoration

Iv just bought a Golf GTI reck. It seems to have had some modification and before restoration starts i need to find out what engine its got in in it does any one know what the various engine codes meen.

There's only 2 GTI engines (AFAIK), the 1.6 and the 1.8. Which year is the engine? The easy way to tell them apart, is to look where the top radiator hose connects to the engine. If its between cylinders 3 and 4 its a 1.8. (The cylinders are numbered starting 1 at the right (WRT the whole car), ie nearest the chassis leg).

The 1.8 engine code is DX, I think (not sure) the 1.6 is EG.
