Hi, the mixing up of Mk1s and Mk2's is a common mistake. It may mean you won't get hold of much info or parts (for sale section has to be for just for mk1's I think). Check out the welcome page and rules sections.
As far as the Golf goes, looks tidy and should see you well. I had a C reg 1.6 petrol Mk2 for a short while - but I'd never go back now that I've driven mk1's. It was very sluggish, but good for town driving, it just didn't like going over 50mph - let alone 60 or 70. It then developed a problem and kept grinding to a halt after driving a few miles. Probably easy to fix etc, but my heart wasn't in keeping it! Probably all just that particular car's woes though!?
Discounting the Gti models, I find the mk1 a better car mainly because (if you're not fussy about added 'extras') it's a lot lighter, and so less powerful non-injection engines work more effectively, 1.3 petrol, 1.6 petrol, 1.6 diesel etc. And I prefer the original mk1 design. Only my humble opinion of course. On the up side, you do get a tad more comfort and space inside a Mk2, a sturdier car around you, probably better handling without mods (?), better brakes, slighlty quieter engines, and often lots of extras like p/s and e/w in later models.
You did well to get such a cheap and low mileage Mk2 Golf though, still a great car and 4 years younger than the latest mk1 tin-top Golfs, so should last a while
