Had two mk1 golf gti's over a period of 5 years.  The first one was a bit of a dog with a nice paint job, but it went like stink for a seemingly unmodified 1.6.
I've had my current car for nearly 3 years.  It's the only car we own since my wife sold her peugeot so it's used daily and has been since I got it.
It's an unmodified 1600 mk1 GTI, although it's lost some of it's original detailing when a previous owner had it repainted.  The wheels are the 14" type fitted to the later cabrio, but I have the original 13"'s.
It's basic, too - no sunroof, no tinted glass, no extra gauges, etc - can't be that many late 1600 series 2's with no options?
But such a great car, costs me an average of ?300 a year in servicing and repairs, hasn't depreciated and gets admiring glances from lads in Corsa's.
Would like to get a decent paint re-finish, with the original detailing restored this summer, cos its starting to lose its sheen.

Ten years ago I was mad about Mini's - indeed I swapped an R-reg Rover Cooper for this…
 


but these are just the best car ever made!

Nice story about your daily driver - I swapped a Mini for my MK1 too! :wink:  Always loved both and may still have a classic Mini again but the Golf gets me every time!

Welcome - the GTI looks good on the Scala wheels . Swapping a Rover for a GTI, think I know who got the better deal there :wink:

aaaarrrrrrr  the mini I think everybody's had one at some time in their car history I owned four, the last one been an ex works rally car loved it to bits. XR3 used to pull at traffice light and think it's just a mini how wrong. Then I found out about the GOLFS and how much more it was. god I'am feeling old now.
