Hello!

Hi All,

Im a newbie from dublin, and im just in the process of buying a mk1 cabrio, i have had a look at 2 now, and the last one i had a look at was in fantastic condition bodywise, but when i started it up (from cold) it was really really smokey and there was an awful lot of petrol leaking out of the exhaust, on driving it, it felt okay but it heated up very fast,
Now im not too familiar with old cars so im not sure if this is normal for this car or if its a dodgey one!

Any advice would be really great as i really do want one of these cars!

Cheers,
Darragh.

Hello and welcome.

I'd avoid any dodgy examples as the Cabby was made right up until 1993 and there are lots of tidy examples around with modest mileage. What you saw coming out of the zorst was probably water though not petrol.

Check out the buying guide on here for more info.

Also may not of been smoke but condensation/vapour if it was a cold day? :dontknow:

Speeding is like masturbation, everyone does it ,but it's not something you should record and put on the internet!!

hahaha well its clear i know LOADS!

Thanks for the advice, it was a 87 CLIPPER, and yeah it was a freezing cold day, is that normal for it to do that? the thing is that i really liked it and it drove well, the only thing was it was an automatic which im not too fond of, would it be worth my while going over to england myself and getting one, as 80% of the mk1's here are on english plates?

The guide is excellent cheers!

hi! welcome to the site! I lived in sligo/galway since i was 5 up until 3 years ago when i moved back here at 20, good to see someone irish on here! I would think your best bet is to get one from the uk, the nct hasnt been in ireland too long really so mk1 golfs were pretty much killed off when that came in due to rust. And you know what the roads are like in ireland and so do i! It does wear a car alot more than if you got one from here. I dont imagine the VRT tax is very much at all on them so you could import one quite cheaply. You'd get a very nice one for ?1500 sterling here, add the cost of petrol and ferry tickets and its not expensive at all, and you would have a car that is very very rare to see on irish roads. Hope this helps!

I'd go for a GTi myself, they hold there value better than the clippers, depends on your age and for insurance ect?

1986 Cabriolet (long resto!)
1983 Cabriolet (daily pain in the bum)
1983 T25 (weekend pain in the bum)
