Hello

Just thought i'd best say hello to everyone, i've posted on here a few times but i guess this will be my new home!

I have always had Mk1'a in various states or forms since i learnt to drive and i currently have:

1982 Mk1 GTI 1.6 Mars Red
1981 Mk1 GTI 1.6 Mars Red
1993 Mk1 Clipper Cabriolet 1.8 White
1998 Polo 6N Open Air 1.4 Black

The Mk1 Shown is my 57000 mile 1982 Mk1, which i have on the road as a second/third car really as i drive the Cab mainly, but it is in original condition, havingnever been restored with the only mods being a stainless exhaust and a tan leather Scirocco Storm interior.

Please excuse the wheels, vents, handles etc on the Cab! I am in the process of returning the bodywork back to standard, fitting a 16v engine, coilovers, new roof and some 8 x 13" ATS Classics in time for my trip over to VW Mania in Belgium on the 6th August.  This is my toy really as the mk1 is due a respray and restoration this winter.

I have a further list of cars that i wont bore you with but these include a 1961 Lotus Elite, UR Quattro, Mk1 Escort RS1800 etc but i'm only 26 and just dont seem to have enough time to work on them all, especially when Stella is so inviting.

Cheers

Paul

I'm not that lucky, as i inherited the Lotus Elite and the RS1800 from my father who passed away in a Motorcycle accident in France a month ago.

But he was 71, riding a Fireblade accross Europe so at least he died doing what he loved and it has made me all the more motivated to complete some of his other projects.

Dont dwell on this post though, i'm not looking for simpathy, just like minded people who apreciate the cars.

Cheers

That is dirt around the bumper hole, i was a little over the top with Waxoil which road grime loves to stick to!

The sill trim isn't on as a reminder to touch up that small rust spot you can see, but the car is absolutly solid, without a doubt the best Mk1 i have had.  It looks like new under the carpets and dash etc

I have no plans really, It has a 16v master cylinder and servo, and 16v brakes waiting to go on as they wont go behind the 13's, which means i will have to go up an inch. Plans after that are a better engine, i'd like to stick to 8v but 16vs are cheap and a good way of upping horses and a full respray reallly.

Ah I see! looked like it was rust, must have been well looked after as the one I brought was rotten in all the common places!

I've yet to experience the joys of the mk1 brakes, heard mixed views about them so might go fo the 16v mk2 brake setup myself if they are no good!

a respray always does mars red justice!

I used to think they were a bit dubious to say the least, but with drilled discs, fast road pads, braided hoses and a recent master cylinder - mine feel great!

I know I keep banging on about it but people get into a Mk1 that hasn't had the brake fluid changed in 10 years, the rear brakes adjusted in god knows how long them moan about them being rubbish!

Al is correct do the following:

Check and adjust rear brakes
Fit braided hoses
Repalce fluid
Decent front disks and pads

in that order and you'll say "why do people complain?"

Forget all that rear disk rubbish - Mk1's are too light for them anyway…

If you up the power - bit bigger disks up front and a 16v servo, but don't bother for standard imho  :D

They arn't bad, its more that they havn't been looked after for so long, just a new set of discs, pads and caliper clean up recondition works wonders.

I put a 16v in her for a while which was why i fitted the 16v master cylinder, but it kept destroying CV joints so the 8v went back in.

But i've since been told it was because i was using Mk2 inner and outer CV joints and they are slightly to big causing too much stress on the inner CV's.

I'm exploring this same 16v route with the Cab, as the Mk1 really did fly with the 16v, if anything it was a little scary but that was mainly due to my standard 13" Wheels!
