I am Very close to buying my first Golf,
Its a 1983 Mk1 5 Door with a 1,093 cc little motor and 147000 miles on the clock

I was just wondering basically what i should look out for mechanically and with the body.

mainly body rot is the biggest problem, most things mechanically can be sorted

The golf i was going to purchase has gone

Anyone know of a mk1 or somethin similar for sale in wirral for less than £500 ?

Thats a shame, but it obviously wasn't meant to be.  

Keep an eye on the for sale ads and hopefully something will turn up for you soon.
