Hello! Opinions Please..!

Hi all,

I've just joined up as i'm possibly about to part exchange my 2003 Audi S3 for a 1983 Mk1 GTi + cash.

I've wanted a Mk1 since 1997 but bought an MG Midget instead (due to insurance costs mainly) which I still have. It has never really made sense to have two classics, but i'm sick of being sensible and i'm now potentially looking at owning a modified MG Midget 1500, a Mk1 GTi and a winter hack of some description!

I wondered if you experts could take a look at my potential new steed and let me know what you think?

I'm not sure on the history of it. It has 64k on the clock which i'm told is genuine but all the paperwork has been lost in the sands of time. The car apparently spent many many moons under a cover in a barn, so I guess the mileage could be right :?

Obviously it's on BBS and coilovers and has Recaro buckets (guessing the original seats were knackered and I understand they're hard to find)?

Any comments welcome, even if you think it's bloomin' obvious, 'cos i'm new and your observations won't be obvious to me I can assure you!

If this deal falls through i'll still be in the market for a Mk1 tintop, so anyone who fancies my S3 should let me know and maybe we could work out a deal!

Here's the S3… (solid Stage One spec)

And the Midget… (Stage Two+ spec)

Sorry if that's too many photos!

Cheers for any feedback!

Cheers Massbad.

I'm not sure Paul, will be finding out soon!

Apparently it's rust-free but i'll have it inspected properly before any deal is done.

Thanks for the advice aircooled and cheers bouchay - the Midget has had a lot of attention since I bought it in 1997! Full resto (new shell) in 2004-05 and an engine rebuild/overbore this time last year.

If the Mk1 is free from rust i'll definately be angling to get my hands on it. Not just my choice though - the Mk1 owner has to check out my S3 and we have to arrange a deal!
If it falls through I'll sell the S3 and find myself a Mk1 from elsewhere.

Is there much fluctuation from season to season in the price of Mk1s? Because the S3 is a good winter car, being 4wd, I thought i'd get max money for it this time of year and pay minimum prices for a Mk1..?

Thanks Red-or-Dead.

The owner of the Mk1 says he doesn't have as much cash as I was hoping for as part of the p/ex.

That's the first stumbling block! If we can get over that hurdle then i'll go and check it for rust. As it stands I simply can't afford the deal he is offering, despite how much I love that car.

It needs a new exhaust and tax which i've factored in to the deal - how much roughly am I looking at for that? £300 fitted for a stainless steel exhaust? Anyone had one made by 'Longlife' or similar? I'd imagine the tax isn't too bad…

I've not completely lost faith in this part exchange yet!

Just got a longlife stainless exhaust fitted 2 weeks ago for £300 and I am delighted with the result!!
They custom make it to suit you for noise and tail design.

Pics are on my thread in projects section, on about page 11 of the thread.

Don't dismiss the deal for exhaust as a new one to your style is a bonus and the golf really does look gorgeous but money still has to be right !!

Excellent, cheers Massbad - just what I wanted to hear! I'll check your thread…

Was originally going to get a Longlife for the S3 but everything is so expensive for these Audis!

His Mk1 + £2300 for my S3 (currently advertised at £6300).

Had no interest in a cash sale of the S3 so far, but it's only advertised on my local VW forum and Audi-Sport.Net at the moment.
I've had a p/ex offer of a Mk2 (1991) which is very nice but I think it's an 8v and I much prefer Mk1s.
Also had an offer of a swap for a 2.7 twin turbo S4 - the guy was very keen but the car is too far away for me to view without commiting.

I think £4000 is a little strong for the Mk1, but the wheels and tyres are worth £1000ish…?

£2300 would allow me to get a new exhaust for the Mk1 and buy a winter hack.
I've been surprised what you can get for 2k - Jag X-Type V6 4x4 with all the toys for example.

If he is after 4 large for the Golf, you really need to go and see it. You could pay for an inspection on the car through the AA or RAC? There about £70 now and you could view the car at the same time. If he has nothing to hide he should welcome the idea!

At £4k for the golf if it is in the condition that it looks like then it prob will be worth it but any car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it !
If I sold my sportline I might want £5k for it but it doesn't mean it's worth it!

If you want it go for it as sometimes if you think about something too much then the fire goes out. I jumped on a plane from Edinburgh to London for mine on the spur of the moment, the best way?

The S3 is a great car but expensive to mod or fix where as with the golf most things are cheapish so your cash can do do much more!!!

All in my opinion

Yeah, i'm viewing it tonight (in a lit garage) and will also get an AA inspection and a second viewing in daylight before any deal goes through.

I love the S3 - it's a superb all rounder and there's not much quicker A to B and more comfortable… but as said, it's expensive to do anything more to it than i've already done!
Hybrid turbo would be the next step, but that would mean FMIC, injectors, exhaust etc as well and that lot costs ££££!
