hello im new! my mk1 story..
so where did it start for me?!
when i was about 15 my older cousins and there friends who could drive all had mk1 golfs, that was a long time ago in the days of a simple lowering would have you a tidy motor.
i promised myself that as soon as i passed my test i would have one too. so when i did i went and bought a ?500 x plate gti, this car was in such bad condition but i didnt care, it had a huge hole in the boot, rust on every panal, the doors would fly open as i took corners, oil leaks, water leaks, over heating…. you know a real bad egg! but who cares it was a gti and i was 18!! happy days!
the car was sold and i moved on to mk2 golfs and since then i have had them all.
the mk1 however did leave an impression on me, as they do, buti have been reluctant to buy one because of my experience and that was 10 years ago now they are even older!!!!
until yesterday! i went to see one with the view to purchase it, it felt so good, what a great car, i didnt buy it as it needed some work, lack of history meant that i wouldnt pay the asking price! but now that i have bitten the bug, im on the hunt!
so hello to you all and i hope to return to mk1 ownership soon!
ps. sorry about the essay!

They're not sloooow! They're a lot lighter than the mk2 which kept the same diesel engine until it 'needed' a turbo to make it drag it's butt around better. You can drive around like a nutter in them if you want to, and they thank you for revving 'em if you feel like it. They keep up with modern traffic and overtake perfectly. They pull from the bottom end so you can chug around in top gear, but are suprisingly responsive when you put your foot down. I can't remember the last time I was overtaken on an A or B road, and on motorways it'll do 105mph quite easily…anyone who goes any faster than that is just a t****r! That's my opinion!
Am I biased or what!
P.S - good luck with the purchase!

if i want speed i got my mk2 16v which keeps me entertained, mind you, as long as its relatively nippy im more then happy, the 16v doesnt get abused, a bit like me its getting older and taking it easy!
