Hello from Leeds....

Hi to all….
Just recently bought a C reg (86) Golf GTi mk1 cabby.
Having to relearn about these engines after driving my much beloved and super reliable T4 van, which is off road and being rebuilt for Harewood Dubfest..
So, where do I start? I'm mechanically minded, 22+ years at being a Carpenter and run a busy Timbershop, dig and ride dirt jumps on my BMX & MTB, I'm also a Director of a Charity called Dig2Ride.net ( have a look )…
Now you know a little about me, I'm hoping that I can get some advice, meet, and share good times too :)
I gotta admit, I've owned a few dubs, but not with an engine as old as this one, does anyone have any maintainence tips? The engine pick up is abit sloppy, are the engines they prone too damp Issue's? Abit of WD40? I ain't seen a dizzy cap in over 15 years!! Just been getting used to old petrol engines and the subtle differences between a diesel one…
Being the great English weather we get, I've found that the roof leaks on both sides of the doors, it's the origanol roof, has splits in the seal to the rear of the front windows, also it's leaking near where the claws fasten the roof down too. The roofs outer vinyl has slight wear on the first fold… I'm I better off getting a new roof? As I'm unsure of the History and quearks of a cabriolet roofed GTi's… Not sure what I'll do with this one, I may keep it and send it in for a MOT test and see what she fails on, the previous owner swears it'll pass, although I did find a MOT fail on the rear n/s wheel arch, but that's cause it's covered in plastics bits, 26 years old and was used as a daily runner.. Welding is not a problem, nor is respraying.. ( I guess I'm gonna keep it then! )
Give me tips and help is much needed as I'm not used to forums..
Thanks and look forward to hooking up with you all..
Bear x

Thank you :)
Yeah I thinks so too.. Just looking up at FleaBay and any info I can find if I do a DIY job on the roof..
I'll get some pics up on photo bucket… Love my dubs, went for a spin at 2 in the morning, today, not as tight a ride as my old mk2 gti.. But getting used to the differences and handling, trying not to wheel spin outa junctions.. Haha ;)
