Hello from Edinburgh!

Hi there folks! Great Forum!

I have 2 mk1 golfs, the 1st is a rare diesel - a GTD (Turbo diesel GTI)
(Which I will be needing help on finding more information on!)
and a little 1.1 phase 1 I bought on impulse off ebay, however it is rotten and most likely be getting stripped!

Now who or what is the best part of the forum to find out more on my turbo diesel?  :?  :)

Hi Jenks and welcome to our little world! Nice rare car you;ve got there by the sound of things.

I forget if anyone else here has similar but 'dubboy' (Rajan) is full of useful (?! - sure he has too much time on his hands  ) information on the MK1's so sure he can answer your questions

Have you got any pics of the GTD you can post?

Welcome to the forum Jenks!

A quick search reveals I posted some trim sample shots here:

and a dash pic (note steering wheel and GTi type gear knob but with "E" instead of "5")

If you have any specific Q's I can try to help.

Meanwhile get some pics posted!

Cheers
Rajan

Dubboy…  on that interior pic, I noticed there's a speaker (well it looks like one) in the centre, was this like an optional extra or something? I have the same speaker pod and have never seen it before on a mk1..

Jenks… get some pics posted  :D

Phil,

That's the single mono speaker pod that some were fitted with - not sure if it was a factory or dealer fit as no radios were factory fitted.

Late top spec Series 2s like Campaign and GX that have the speaker pockets in the doors will obviously not have the central speaker. The main reason being by 1983 most people wanted stereo not mono radios.

I think the central speaker was fitted at the dealer when a mono radio was ordered for non GTi & GX models. IMany cars were fitted with stereo radios having aftermarket speakers cut into the door cards for these models. Also I imagine many people over the years have moved to a stereo radio and taken out the mono speaker.

I remember my Dad ordering his Formel E with the mono Blaupunkt Hamburg and it had this speaker too.

Cheers
Rajan

  I'm confused… because it's on my GTI which has the door card speakers :dontknow:

I guess someone could have put the mono speaker in at some point..

Or more likely put in the later door pockets/cards if yours is an early Series 2...

people over the years have moved to a stereo radio and taken out the mono speaker.

Just did that with my Golf C. Got it last year and still had a centre speaker fitted (although late series 2). The speaker box has a VW/Audi part number in it and is simply fitted over the central cubby hole.
