Hello all and Help!!

Hi to you all,

I'll be honest and blunt.  I have a Mk1 1982 GTi that is making a variety of noises - hard to describe other than occasional clunking, scraping, sqealing perhaps some more noises may appear within the week.  The additional problem is that I know nothing about mechanics, but what I do know is that I refuse to use 'mobile mike', some local place that can't fix it but we'll charge loads anyway or kwik fit.  I have had enough dealings with these buffoons to write a book.
What would make me happy is any recommendations of guys/gals in my area so my beloved car can get repaired. I could drive out of my vicinity but would prefer not due to the problems getting progressively worse.
I am located nr. Camberley/Surrey.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Victoria.

When does the clunking and squeaking occur? Is it only when its moving? I'm thinking, could be suspension related. If its a squeak at low speeds which disappears at high speed, it could be the brake pads not greased.

Also the clunking could be due to the exhaust being improperly fitted. Its a known issue on the Golfs, that if you simply let the exhaust hang and then tighten it up, it sits at a slight angle to the ideal and it will bang on the axle or underbody.

Oh, and welcome!

Could be a number of things if you cannot solve it then I can recommend a garage that is not to far from you that will do a good job.

The squealing/sqeaking/rubbing sort of noise happens loudly on right hand turn, but can hear it pretty much most of the time.  The knocking sound comes and goes and I can particulary feel it under the drivers footwell.  There appears to be no pattern with high or low speed and the severity of this.  8O

Quiksilver:  Those garage names will come in handy, thanks!
