I'm back - and hopefully I'll be able to say the same of my Mk1 soon!

Hi All,

Not a brand new newbie as I have been on this forum many moons ago. Time got away from me and my 1978 Golf GLS has remained dormant and neglected in my garage, but it really is my intention to resurrect the car once again (the last time I did this was in 1996 when I restored it to use as my first car). I realise that the abundance of parts that were available back then will have now dried up, so I hope to lean on this forum for advice on where to go for any bits I might need.

The car was purchased new by my father in 1978 and has remained in the family ever since. As for road use, it only saw action between 1978 and 1982, and 1996 and 1998, hence its relatively low mileage of around 53K miles from new. And of course being the 1978 model, it has the series 1 dashboard, small rear lights and chrome bumpers.

The first thing to do is replace the tyres - currently it sits on its original Michelin XZX tyres (older than me!!). In fact, most of the car is original (suspension, clutch, radiator, distributor, alternator etc) so much will need replacing. I swapped the exhaust for stainless steel so that should be okay. The brakes will definitely need attention (and I'd appreciate any tips as to how to improve their efficiency - I have been spoilt by the stoppers on my mk7 Golf R so those on the Mk1 be non-existent by comparison!).

The Mk1 is a rare sight these days - lets see if we can increase the number still on the road by one!

Thanks! IMG_2438.JPG

Greetings back at you from another owner from Buckinghamshire.

Your car looks great and to be on original tyres must be a rare thing in these days, might be worthy of a museum!

nice car, and yes possibly worth a call to the vw collection… Lots of parts have become available recently as the germans, and usa see the market has grown that its worth production runs in old rubber and plastics.
main thing is change fuel lines for new  additive/ethanol resistant type , brakes get them serviced,  vac lines get persished by age, so change them too..  Wheels and tyres maybe a set of refurbed wheels with new tyres, will come up cheap, and just keep the old for shows if you want to show the original parts.
