good to average mileage for a Mk1 GTI 1983

Hello, Ive just joined the Mk1 Golf Owners Club :)
I have always had a soft spot for the MK1, but recently Ive had my heart strings tugged even more when I saw a black, y reg GTI, in excellent condition and I just knew I had to get one!

I am a girlie, but a petrol head and I reckon I know quite alot about most older cars (the ones with character) not the ever so dull ecco friendly, drives very boringly cars.

Anyway, I am waffling, i will get to the point, I am after a good to go, black, shiny, Mk1 GTI, from 1983, my trouble is, I don't know what would be classed as good mileage or average mileage for a car this age? And how much life would I get out of an engine if I did buy a GTI with over 120k on the clock?

Help would be mostly appreiciated.

welcome to the site

as for the mile's 120k seems fair

the less genuine miles on the car the more it is worth

if the car is solid and the engine has been well mantained then the choice is yours

185,000 on my gti and I've just rebuilt the engine… it was only smoking a tad even at that mileage… it's largely irrelevant though as it depends how much it's been thrashed or what type of life it had. Read the buyers guide for tips but you'll love it when you do get one…. big warm welcome to the club

Mine has 398,000 km on the original 1.6 fuel injected motor. Of course, it spent the first 359k mated to an automatic gear box. No smoke, minor leaking of oil, and the only indicator that I need to replace it is an alarming amount of crankshaft end-float.

Like the above 120k would be nice,
Personally i would rather have 200k which has been regulary serviced rather than 50k that has had one service!, So please go on paperwork you can see,the 3 goldern rules, History History History

Like spud said look at the buyers guide and look at cills, round the windscreen and the arches for rust.

Good luck
