its not the handling you've got to worry about at your age - it's insurance!

I'd be interested to hear how much they would want you to pay for insurance for a cabby!

in answer to your question - i'm sure it does effect the handling not having a roof, but having never driven a tintop Mk1 i couldn't tell you by howmuch.

Welcome, by the way.

I briefly owned a Cabrio recently and thought it compared quite well with the tintop when the roof was up but there was a degree of scuttle shake when the roof was down. Apart from that I thought the cabby handled pretty well.

I would have thought that most MK1's in scrappies are in their due to being badly corroded MOT failures so ideally are suited to providing spare parts, rather than being bought as restoration projects. That's why I thought you must have been after a damaged repairable. Tread very carefully if getting a car from a breakers.

find a 1.1 tintop with a decent shell and start from there, regardless of what car you have for a first one you will get. shafted on the insurance, mines only a sensible price now because im 25.
Dont let that scare you though keep us posted on the project, and dare i say it keep an eye on evil bay you do get some bargins occasionally just make sure you give them a look over before buying.

Insurance companies like to boot up the premium for the first two years of owning a soft top.  To keep the costs down I'd do as suggested above - buy a tintop 1.1 or 1.3.

To get reasonable premiums on a cabby I'm afraid you're probably going to have to wait until you're at least 21 or even better 25.  A clean driving licence also helps.  I'm 28 with a cabby gti, 6 points over the past 4 years and 1 year's no claims bonus - I've had quotes of between ?820 (adrianflux) and ?1960 for fully comp.

Good luck
