You can't tell from the chassis number! There's a few articles on the home page (right hand side) which detail how to identify if your car is a Campaign or not.

welcome, get up some pics mate, so we can all see
this should help a bit
Campaign models should have a specific code in the Chassis (VIN) number. This should read WVW ZZZ 17EW nnnnnn. Where the 17 means a Mk1 Golf, the E is signifies an August 83 onwards manufacture date and the W implies the car was built in Wolfsburg Germany. Note that all mk1 Golfs produced after August 1983 will have an E in their chassis number, this includes the base models, and the runout 'GX' model too, so the chassis number is not unique to the campaign.
For reference, convertible Mk1 Golfs have a 'K' in place of the W after the year indicator. These cars were not built in Wolfsburg, but in Onsabruck, where the Karmann factory is located.
this should help a bit

Doesn't mean anything except that it was a 1984 model, it could be a Golf C, LX, GX, C diesel, or non-Campaign GTI! All the E tells you is the model year. Also you can have a DW chassis code car which is a campaign!!!!!!

The Campaign is a bunch of options defined by options code S707 and Pirelli alloy wheels S750. The E is simply the model year identifier. Since there are other Mk1 Golfs with 1984 model year; and Campaigns with D year identifier (1983 model year), it doesn't help to identify them, although there has been a certain amount of misinformation over the years (see article "the campaign controversy").

follow the instructions post on the newbies forum, you'l need to set your self up on photobucket upload your picson there and then when you start a new post on here copy the URL on the pic from photo bucket and then go back to your post on here, left click on the little URL box above and then paste the URL for the picture and everytimeyou want to put a pic on just click the little URL BOX and paste the url for the pic you'v copied from the photo on bucket, it sounds complicated but once you do it your away, i was the same when i did it for the 1st time
