Bonjourno - Ed just joined the Mk1 VW Golf community

Hi all

I'm Ed. Just purchased a Mk1 1.8 Golf Clipper Cabriolet in red. Real lovely example. Just took it for a full service. Cost me ?500 though all in but I need need a new rad, front discs and brakes etc

I currently live down in Hampshire but am moving back to Guildford in 4 weeks where I used to live. I have 3 cars, well kinda…….the Golf, a modified Ax GT (vtr nos etc) and just sold my Nissan 300zx TT. Bought the cab for some summer open top fun. Oh the 3rd car is my company car, its a Honda Civic Type R but i have just had a crash so still dont know if ill be seeing that car again yet.

Anyway first question is what size 16s and tyres go on my clipper mk1 model? i have just purchase some Oz Super Ts with 205 45 16 rubber on but its kinda rubbing on all the arches at the mo

Do i need less wide wheels or different size tyres, thanks

Ed

PS It actually looks great anyway with the steelies on

Hi Ed,

Welcome aboard! 16's are a little on the big size for the Mk1 to be honest. 15s are the largest recommended size for the mk1 to fit without problems, and they were on 13's for most of their life!

Other can comment on the overall rolling diameter, but there isn't that much room in those arches!

Cheers,

Drew.

The MK1 cabrio looks a bit too much like a rollerskate on wheels bigger than 15"    Having oversize wheels also upsets the decent feel of the steering and tramlining becomes a problem.

Welcome Ed!

I run 195/45s on my 16" Compomotives to keep the same rolling radius
and not compromise the handling too much.

my wheels are 7x16 with 205x45 16 tyres so i guess i will change them for 195 45 and they might not rub
