Any tips on buying a golf mk1 1.1c

I'm 17 years old and just about to buy my first vw golf mk1, i can only afford to insure a 1.1c. i would appreciate any tips as what to look for when buying. And are there any known problems to look out for.

Many thanks. GeorgeBrown

Hiya mate….. best bit of advice is check the buyers guide as it list everything to check for.  Rust is one of the main problems so maybe get yourself to some meets to see peoples cars in the flesh… then view, view, view…. dont buy the first one you see…. look around and you will get used to seeing a good model from an over priced one… you aren't wasting peoples time because you can always go back if you don't find anything better  :dontknow:

Welcome to the site and good to see you have cracking taste in cars…. for a young pup

Thanks spudfingers for your reply. Im thinking of going to see a mk1 golf on sunday, its a 1983 with 128,000 miles on the clock! its had some work done to it such as a new clutch, gearbox and is serviced regularly, the car has also had a recent re-spray back to the original red. its priced at £2,500ono what do you think?

Hard to say without seeing it but lack of rust is key mate.  I'd say for a 1.1 that's a tad expensive in this market…  :dontknow: … as I say though it really is something you have to see in the flesh to make a judgement.  Are there any other 1.1's you could see tomorrow?  Check them out compared to the one on Sunday?

I tend to agree with spudfingers on the price tag.It would have to be something extra special at £2500 ,dont let this put you off though if its totally original and very good condition and it should need nothing doing now or for some time.Hope you find a good example they are economical and definatlly great driven within speed limits.Dont expect the head gasket to last long if you want to do long distance high speed motorway miles above the national limit.
