Mk1 caddy r32 speedometer problems
Hi, I've recently brought a mk1 caddy with r32 engine and gear box, the speedometer isint working, the lad I brought it from said it's because its mechanical and clocks aren't… I'm really struggling to work out what I need to do, any help or links Would be great
Thanks

IIRC the r32 has a magnetic transducer or pickup for the ODO. Where as the older mk1 Caddy uses a mechanical cable. So you would need either a new set of clocks, or a convertor if they still make them.
If you are using a Cable and the tranny is cable driven, then the easiest thing to check is that the Speedo cable didn't pull off of your clocks… Happens all the time to me working on my golf if I am careless…. easy to put back on, on a LHD as you pop the Left side Vent and worm your way to the speed to reseat the clip.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?
They all start with GOOD Grounds.
Where are my DIY Links?

So which cl;ocks do you actually have, the original golf ones, the ones that go with the engine / box, or something else? I know nothing about r32 gearbox,s, but when doing 1.8t conversions for instance i believe a speedo cable from a mk 2 golf ( believe CQ sells these) screws in where the sensor on the gearbox goes and fits the mk 1 speedo..

I was told by the previous owner that it needs doing so cable had definitely not pulled off,
There the original caddy clocks, I've tried to book in with a few local garages but no one seems really keen to help me,
Dont really know where to go with it as I have no idea about cars.
I thourght about buying an electric speedo but it the miles not clocking up I dont like the idea off for mot and insurance reasons.

First of all take a picture of the clocks you have and also of the gearbox so we can figure out what you need to do.
There are some options but without knowing the specifics it will be difficult to figure out.

Mk1 caddy r32 engine.. speedo trouble
Also interested in this thread as just joined today! Always wanted a mk1 Caddy and managed to find a practically untouched one owner 1.6 diesel last week in need of some loving.
Cant help you with the question buddy but i’d be interested in any answers that come from forum members.
I have already converted my Caddy 2K van to an R36 dsg from the passat and near to completing a 4 motion on it too.
Interested to know how your Caddy drives with the R32 in it as I have a second R36 lump as an option for the pick up!
Hope you get some answers and its sorted soon
