8v mark one Golf clipper - Changing Carbs

20140621_092514.jpg Can anybody guide me.

I have a mark one golf clipper, looks pretty etc. The engine only has 70,000 from new car is a 1991 non fuel injected so just has the single carb, K&N FILTER.

I only use the car on fair days & holidays, so would'nt mind doing a project on this car.

Was thinking about changing the cam and carb, to a set of twin 40's, and later changing the exhaust system.
Any ideas would help, like where can i get the manifold, will the manifold fit, which would be the betters carbs to install, linkage etc, and who/where to get them from, and naturally with out breaking the bank aswell

Any suggestions, with out ha-ha any abuse, don't ant to really be putting a fuel injection 16v in the car, as i am old school and love carbs. Dont take any notice of the GTI badge on the car, as it is not a GTI, YES IM A FAKE HAHAH.

Well you are also missing the red trim on the grille.

Can't answer on the carbs, but using a 4-2 g60 manifold and a dual down pipe makes the exhaust flow better,,,,, and you get 250 more horse power, well 250 more smiles to the liter of fuel at take off, that and coupled with a short shifter kit…… MMMM MMMM good.

Keep your eye open for a manifold second hand or pop over to eBay and pick one up new.

I think St engineering make them new to order. Depends on budget and speed you want it.

Twin 40s are all that are required, you will over fuel with 45s.

Obviously with weber you'll need type 151s as they are the tuneable ones iirc. Any other and the progression circuits can cause trouble if you're going for serious tuning.

Personally I prefer Dellortos to Webers but that's just me.

Don't worry too much about a matched pair but be prepared to service them before use. The kits are easily available but not cheap.

Linkages are easy to get hold of and vary in design and cost. It's either a personal choice or a budget choice.

Webcon are great and very helpful.

Exhausts and manifolds are also easily found. Again budget will probably be the decider. Don't go too big or otherwise its a major pain trying to get it over the rear beam in situ and you'll having knocking issues on the beam or the boot floor.

Keep an eye out in the classifieds as stuff comes up quite regularly.

BTW my Bro in Law runs twins on his 8v and he got about a 25% increase in power and more torque too.

You may not want a fuel injected 16v, so fit a twin carb 16v, at least they wont be sitting over a hot exhaust manifold.
