yet another 20vt conversion thread

Well ive been reading and reading and then rereading everything as its all conflicting information. Ive just taken on a 20vt conversion, my starter car is a 1.1 with 4 speed box so i know its not ideal as the mounts are different to a big block. My donor car is a mk4 golf with the agu engine in it and i believe the 02j box?

Now my first question is from what ive read i need the 1.8 mounts from a mk1 for 3 of the 4, except the cambelt end? Is that correct? (i know i need a custom jobby for the cambelt end). im hoping to use the box from the mk4 so will the mk1 1.8 mounts mate up to that? or again do i need custom ones?

Next thing is from what ive read i need 100mm driveshafts to work with the 02j box? now what car do i get these from? im guessing the mk1 shafts i currently have are no good, but what about the cv's? again some guidance from someone whose done it would be nice

Last question for today, the o2j in the mk4 uses a hydro clutch and id really like to keep this for relaibiltiy and day to day practicality( plus the girlfriend will be insured on this and her clutch control isnt great at the best of times, never mind with a heavy clutch). So what bits did you use to run a hydraulic clutch in the mk1? (i made a conversion to go the other way in a mini and change over to a cable when it had a vauxhall engine in it and tbh it wasnt great)

thanks in advance im sure il have more questions

Right for the drivers side you will need to get hold of a big block engine mount of a mk1, the one thats welded to the chassis leg as the mount is set further back towards the bulkhead on the chassis leg.Cut the original one off and weld the big block one on in the right place. you will need custom mounts for the cambelt end and if you are going to use the 02j box you will need custom mounts for the passener side gearbox mount (the one that bolts to the chassis leg) and the rear mount on the gearbox. Also if you are using the 02j starter motor you will need slightly longer bolts so that you can fit the original front mount as these bolts hold the mount in place.
You can get 100mm drive shafts from cabbys, i brought mine brand new of ebay came with inner and outer cvs attached about £170, you then need to check how big the flanges are on the gearbox some have 100mm ones fitted mine were 108mm so had to change them.
As for the clutch i have converted mine to cable just for the ease of it and dont find it to be that heavy, i will be lookin into changin it to hydro in the future but makin my own conversion, you can buy pedal boxes that have been converted but they aint cheap so guess it comes down to money. Hope this helps Andy

Thats brilliant and its cleared a lot of it up, im going to have a look how hard the mounts look to make once ive got the engine sat in roughly the right place as i worked in a steel fabricators for 6 month and still have acess to the stuff, its just a matter of how long it will take me in comparison to how much some ready made ones are

And for driveshafts im probably going to be best buying some brand new ones then so im guessing the likes of gsf or similar?

thanks again

do you know what hubs would be standard on a 02j?

02j hubs no good mk4 totally different. what he meant was he had to get later mk1 bearing carrier/hub assemblies from a cabrio/scirocco. the reason is the 100mm shaft cv is a little bigger so it locks up when fitted to an early mk1. you can grind the required clearance into the cv/bearing carrier instead if you like though

Very Early 02J box's come with 100mm flanges, later ones 108mm but there easy to swap over as its just 1 bolt in the middle that holds them on..

I'm also doing this conversion and I've had my mount moved back to the big block pistion but reading your post I'm s bit worried that my mount won't be right as it was the 1.1 mount is this right.

Im not sure if your mount will be right as from what i remember it sits at a slight different angle dont quote me on that i maybe wrong but when i had my 1.1 converted to a 1.6 i had to have a mount of a car with the big block mount. Best thing to do is have a look at a big block car a physical look and do some measurements caus its crutial the the engine sits right.

you caqn remover the small mount bracket turn it upside down and weld it back on in the big block mount position

So i think i know where im going with this now, having looked into the mounts (the mk4 ones are of no use) im thinking ium just going to bite the bullet and buy them from crazyquiffs. has anyone else used them to mount the 02j box? whats the quality and quality of fitment like?

There the ones i used and with the o2j box, there good quality and easy to fit, could of made them myself when i looked at them but saves time and removes alot of the hassle of makin them yourself.

That's what I was thinking they don't look overly complicated it's more the time to do it
