Will 17" wheels fit?

merry christams all :)
im looking to buy some new wheels, but im wondering what is the largest size alloy that can be fitted. ive priced up some 15" which look great but im wondering if it would be safe to go with some 17" and low profile tyres. has anyone had 17's fitted to their golf before? if so what do i need to do to get it sorted?
cheers

Hi mate Happy Christamas.

It is possible to fit 17'' with arch modifications but really I would not bother.

They will look too big and make it look/handle like a rollerskate!

Get some nice 15'' and slam it

There of loads of 15" alloys that will look dappa on your mk1. 8)

I used to own a mk1 - well I've had 2 actually - YDU 720X & SMU 420Y. Currently I drive an 98 Scotia White Mitsubishi Evolution V RS…. fancy getting another mk1 someday :D

15" wheels offer the best performance (acceleration) and handling combination, 17" alloys even with low low profile tyres will make it tramline and will effect the speedo lots. I have driven MK1s will big alloys and they make it drive horrible.
I can't express enough hate for mk1s on 17s :dontknow:
15" with 195 or 185/45/15 are best

Yep tis true! Mrrezistor why not go for a period alloy wheels from makes like bbs, ronal, ats, etc. Some moden designs can look out of place on a mk1. Your best bet is checking out other peoples rides and find a design you like. Have a browse through the site and see what takes your fancy.

It's worth getting some perfomance rubber too. I'm using toyo proxes t1-r's 195/45/15 which i really reccommend but if price is a issue try Nankang they're not bad at all.

Take your time choosing……. wheels can make or brake a car 8)
